Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited vocational nursing program is required.
  • Three years of experience in an acute care or ambulatory care setting are required.
  • The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with physicians, staff, and patients.
  • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Word, including Internet access and utilization, are required.
  • The candidate must demonstrate excellent customer service behavior.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required to handle sensitive situations and confidential information.
  • The candidate must be able to make decisions effectively with appropriate stakeholder input.
  • A valid California Vocational Nursing license is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Intravenous Therapy certification is required.
  • Keck Program Preceptor Certification is required; new hires must obtain it within 90 days or by the next class.
  • Fire Life Safety Training from the City of Los Angeles is required; if unavailable at hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Registered Nurse or medical provider under direction while using the nursing process to provide therapeutic care to patients.
  • Provide direct patient care, patient education, phlebotomy, and coordination of specific services as directed.
  • Perform basic assessment, participate in care planning, execute interventions, and contribute to evaluating individualized interventions.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain and record vital signs and medication lists, monitor patient flow, and prepare patient charts with pertinent medical information.
  • Assist physicians with examinations, treatments, minor clinical procedures, minor surgical procedures, special procedures, and diagnostic examinations as permitted by the license.
  • Perform electrocardiograms and administer medications, including injections and intravenous medications, as directed by a physician.
  • Assess and monitor patients' conditions and notify the physician or healthcare professional as appropriate.
  • Schedule diagnostic tests ordered by physicians and schedule and receive patients.
  • Prepare and maintain medical records.
  • Perform administrative duties, including answering and returning patient calls, receiving and sorting incoming faxes, and obtaining prior authorizations.
  • Enter charges into the system accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Handle telephone calls and write correspondence.
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians and other individuals.
  • Take patient histories and vital signs.
  • Implement effective and efficient patient flow.
  • Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation when needed.
  • Organize pharmacy refill requests for physician approval.
  • Provide medical information and education to patients according to established protocols and guidelines.
  • Triage patients in person and by telephone.
  • Maintain patients' privacy, safety, and confidentiality and maintain a safe environment in accordance with standards, policies, and safety regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with infection-control policies.
  • Work independently and in a team setting to complete duties in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
