Physicians Mutual introduces Secure Essential(TM) Life Insurance.

Physicians Mutual introduces Secure Essential(TM) Life Insurance. Expanding Options in Final Expense Market OMAHA, Neb. - (May 11, 2026) - Physicians Mutual has launched Secure Essential(TM) Life Insurance, a new simplified issue whole life product designed for independent brokers and aimed at the growing senior and final expense market. The product enters a competitive segment typically characterized by lower face amounts and limited flexibility, introducing features to broaden how agents position coverage for clients ages 55 and older. "Too many individuals approach retirement without the level of financial protection they need," said Joe Kenny, VP, Product Management at Physicians Mutual. "Secure Essential is designed to close that gap by making life insurance more accessible, flexible and aligned with the realities facing today's retirees and pre-retirees." Secure Essential offers whole life face amounts up to $100,000 for ages 55-70 and $50,000 for ages 71-80, while maintaining simplified issue underwriting with no medical exams or fluids. Most final expense products cap coverage at $50,000 or less unless fully underwritten, making higher limits a notable differentiator. "With Secure Essential, Physicians Mutual is one of only a few carriers offering instant underwriting decisions to the 55+ consumer, at higher face amounts on whole life products," said Kenny. The product is distributed exclusively through a digital application platform, where underwriting data, including prescription history, motor vehicle reports and other electronic health information, is gathered in real time. In most cases, agents receive an instant underwriting decision at the point of sale, with no additional requirements ordered. "We know that technology is playing an increasingly important role in access to financial protection," said Tim Reed, VP, Agency Sales Management at Physicians Mutual. "With Secure Essential's simplified digital application experience, we're helping more consumers obtain coverage in a way that is both efficient and reliable, while being agent friendly." In addition to base whole life coverage, Secure Essential includes optional term riders, allowing for total coverage up to $250,000. Term options are available in 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-year level periods and follow the same underwriting criteria as the base policy. The ability to combine permanent and term coverage provides agents with added flexibility to manage client premiums while addressing higher short-term coverage needs. 77 percent of U.S. consumers do not retire debt-free, according to Boston College Center for Retirement Research, with 44% of Americans ages 60-70 still carrying a mortgage when they retire, according to American Financing. As demand for adequate life insurance rises among older consumers, Secure Essential reflects the continued evolution within the final expense market, for carriers to introduce digital underwriting and expanded product designs to meet the needs of pre-retiree and senior consumers who may still carry financial obligations such as mortgages or dependent support. Secure Essential is now available in 38 states through licensed independent brokers.
