Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Diploma/Certificate Program is required.
  • Zero to one year of experience in an office or ambulatory clinic setting as a Front Office Medical Assistant is required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, with the ability to interview patients and interface with physicians, nurses, and other professional staff, is required.
  • Knowledge of electronic health records and computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English and Spanish is required.
  • Comfort with computers and medical terminology is required.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training certification is required within Los Angeles City; if unavailable at hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Act as the main point of contact for participants and families and provide a positive front-desk experience.
  • Greet and check in patients, schedule appointments, and perform other front-desk functions.
  • Confirm patient availability and accurately review appointment date, time, location, and provider name with callers.
  • Act as an advocate and liaison for patients, the Health Center, and the continuum of care as appropriate.
  • Answer telephone calls promptly and professionally and direct calls to other departments as needed.
  • Use sound judgment when handling calls, including recognizing when to escalate calls.
  • Maintain delegated worklists through the electronic medical record.
  • Use equipment effectively, efficiently, and safely.
  • Handle patient requests and questions appropriately.
  • Provide benefit plan and eligibility information to participants, providers, unions, employers, and others.
  • Adhere to Culinary Health Center and Keck Medicine of USC Nevada policies and procedures.
  • Perform care coordinator duties when assigned.
  • Determine patient care needs and direct patients accordingly.
  • Prepare patient charts before appointments, including obtaining X-rays and pertinent laboratory work and arranging special equipment.
  • Set up examination rooms, assist physicians with examinations and procedures, and monitor patient flow.
  • Prepare and administer adult and pediatric immunizations according to provider orders.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and obtain and record vital signs.
  • Ensure healthcare delivery areas are stocked, organized, cleaned, and disinfected.
  • Maintain files and records and oversee equipment and office supply inventory.
  • Photocopy, collate, fax, distribute, mail, and perform errands.
  • Ensure physician orders for medications and treatments are implemented by appropriate staff.
  • Record patient information in charts and electronic health records according to Joint Commission standards.
  • Schedule patient appointments and diagnostic tests ordered by physicians.
  • Maintain patient privacy, safety, and confidentiality and comply with infection control policies and safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
