Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous work experience in health care is preferred.
  • The employee must be enrolled in the URMC ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program or become certified through an alternate method within 180 days.
  • The employee must obtain Certified Pharmacy Technician certification through the PTCB Certification Exam within 180 days.
Responsibilities
  • Train and participate in medication storage and inventory management activities, including stocking medication areas, rotating stock, checking expiration dates, and removing expiring medications.
  • Train and participate in customer service activities in the main pharmacy work area, communicate constructively with pharmacy colleagues, customers, patients, and hospital staff, triage phone calls, and handle medication requests while deferring clinical decisions to a pharmacist.
  • Use service recovery techniques to troubleshoot and resolve problems in the medication use system, communicate resolutions to appropriate staff, and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Prepare for PTCB Certification through the 12-week PTU program, completing didactic, simulation, experiential, computer-based, and assigned coursework and rotations under program administration and preceptors.
  • Follow employment and PTU policies and procedures, minimize unapproved absences, and complete missed coursework in a timely manner.
  • Train and participate in medication delivery activities, including use of the pneumatic tube system, hand delivery of patient medications, and documentation of medication transfers and tracking.
  • Train and participate in medication preparation activities by preparing medication orders, obtaining medications, determining required doses, packaging medications according to applicable laws, completing logs, using safety checks, operating and maintaining automated systems, and performing medication repackaging.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
