Requirements
  • A Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in ecology, biology, microbiology, or another related field.
  • The ability to provide evidence that all requirements for completion of the Ph.D. have been met before the effective date of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Initiate research projects within the lab’s research sphere, wrap up existing manuscripts, mentor students, and assist with lab management activities.
  • Work closely with the principal investigator, collaborators, and lab personnel to lead research in the laboratory and/or field.
  • Perform molecular techniques including DNA extractions, polymerase chain reaction, quantitative polymerase chain reaction for pathogen diagnostics, 16S ribosomal RNA library preparation, and other high-throughput sequencing methods.
  • Prepare, process, and analyze amplicon sequencing and metagenomic data.
  • Compile, manage, and analyze datasets using appropriate statistical methods, including univariate and multivariate methods.
  • Lead the preparation and publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Present research findings at conferences.
  • Contribute to lab management activities by coordinating lab equipment use, curating lab databases, and coordinating lab ordering.

  • Interest in preparing scientific publications.
  • The ability to design and execute experimental studies, including pathogen exposure experiments.
  • Experience with molecular techniques.
  • Experience analyzing barcoded amplicon sequencing and/or metagenomic data.
  • Experience with statistical modeling, including general linear models and network analysis.
  • Experience culturing microorganisms, including fungi and/or bacteria.
  • Experience with R and/or other programming languages.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics and modeling approaches for microbiome datasets.
  • The ability to bridge microbial ecology, genomics, transcriptomics, statistics, and immunology.
  • Experience or interest in supervising students.
