Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant Program.
  • Graduate from a Surgical Tech Program.
  • Certification as a CSA, SA-C, or CST/CFA through the respective certifying bodies.
  • Must be licensed to practice as a Surgical Assistant in Illinois.
  • CPR certification is required.
  • Must have one year of Surgical Tech experience.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as first assistant in designated surgical procedures under the direct supervision of the operating surgeon or physician.
  • Handle all varieties of tissue appropriately to reduce potential injury or compromised blood supply.
  • Use surgical instruments appropriately and employ principles of safe tissue handling.
  • Provide exposure to the operative site.
  • Provide and maintain hemostasis.
  • Perform wound closure.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of normal and pathological anatomy and physiology.
  • Safely position patients for surgical procedures and assist with transport to and from the operative suite.
  • Assist the surgeon in identifying patient and staff safety hazards.
  • Prepare and drape patients for surgical procedures.
  • Provide exposure of the operative site through appropriate use of retractors.
  • Manipulate equipment and instruments to enhance the visual field.
  • Suction and sponge to maintain a dry surgical field and optimal visualization.
  • Provide counter-traction of tissue using various instruments.
  • Assist with maintaining hemostasis by clamping or ligating vessels, using electrocautery, applying manual direct pressure, assisting with topical pharmaceutical agents such as thrombin, and using other means as directed by the surgeon or physician.
  • Tie and cut sutures.
  • Suture all varieties of tissues and tissue planes with appropriate suture materials and techniques; assist with wound closure or independently close wounds under the surgeon's direction.
  • Assist with or independently apply dressings and tape at the end of surgical procedures using proper aseptic or sterile techniques.
  • Maintain current knowledge of procedures performed.
