Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a Human Services field, or a bachelor's degree in any field plus at least two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area.
  • Considerable knowledge of social work principles and practices, human behavior and motivational theory, human services laws, policies and regulations, investigating and interviewing techniques, legal procedures, and social, economic, and health problems.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer, associated software, and a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; interview, assess needs, counsel, and refer clients; investigate high-risk cases; testify in court; develop and present training programs; interpret program laws, policies, and regulations; develop and implement service plans; analyze case information; respond diplomatically to clients' emotions; plan and manage work activities; maintain records; establish effective relationships; and stay current with social work trends.
  • Considerable experience in the assigned program area and completion of required training programs, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Successful completion of a DMV/driving record check, pre-employment drug screen, Central Registry and/or criminal history search, with possible fingerprint, employment, reference, education, credit, and other checks.
  • Willingness to work in the community emergency shelter during a natural disaster or emergency.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor, coordinate, and administer assigned programs.
  • Coordinate services within the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Write service plans and present cases to determine appropriate services.
  • Track expenditures, prepare and submit budget estimates, and ensure payment for services.
  • Interpret laws, policies, and regulations as applied to the assigned area.
  • Complete federal, state, and local planning and reporting requirements.
  • Manage program waiting lists and provide caseload management services.
  • Provide case management and foster care casework services.
  • Train foster parents and submit progress reports to the court.
  • Refer families to community treatment resources and provide parent education and support.
  • Transport children to placements, meetings, therapy sessions, medical and dental appointments, and family visitation.
  • Attend court, testify in court, and coordinate cases with attorneys.
  • Conduct intensive in-home counseling and prepare reports for referral sources.
  • Interview and assess clients and assign them to appropriate groups.
  • Inform clients about service programs, rules, regulations, and participation rights.
  • Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in protective services and/or foster care.
  • Investigate referrals, interview involved parties, and assess immediate and long-term risks to children.
  • Develop written service plans documenting goals, objectives, and services provided for each case.
  • Conduct visits and maintain contact with other professionals.
  • Accompany victims and their families to court appearances and file petitions.
  • Prepare court-ordered home assessments and custody home studies.
  • Establish and maintain case records.
  • Code, enter, and update cases in the state computer information system.
  • Represent the agency at civic and business associations and provide training and workshops on child and adult abuse and neglect.
Desired Qualifications
  • Possession of a Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work degree.
  • Possession of a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license.
  • Previous experience applying social work principles and practices.
  • Experience with agency-associated software.
  • Experience in the assigned program area and completion of required training programs.
  • Experience in Child Protective Services with forensic interviewing training.
  • Experience obtaining and maintaining resource families.
  • Experience with in-home services.
