Sensata launches FaultBreak contactor for EVs

Sensata launches FaultBreak contactor for EVs. Sensata Technologies has launched FaultBreak, a high voltage device combining fuse and contactor functions for EVs * March 5, 2026 Sensata Technologies has launched the FaultBreak contactor, a high voltage switching and protection device designed to combine the functions of a fuse and contactor in a single unit for electric vehicles. The company says the component reduces part count by more than 50% compared to conventional fuse and contactor systems. FaultBreak offers passive fault protection that interrupts high-magnitude fault currents without relying on external detection electronics, supporting ISO 26262 compliance. The device has been validated to clear faults of up to 16kA at 1kV and can be reset after temporary faults, unlike single-use pyrofuses. "Our FaultBreak contactor represents an important advancement in high voltage protection," Markus Schwabe, Executive Vice President of Automotive at Sensata Technologies, said. "It helps our customers build electric vehicles that are safer, more dependable, and more economical to produce and maintain." By eliminating the need for separate pyrofuses, busbars, and low voltage harnesses, the component simplifies vehicle architecture and reduces weight and thermal losses, according to Sensata. The device features hermetic sealing for stable contact resistance and a compact footprint suited to higher voltage EV platforms. Sensata will showcase FaultBreak at ACT Expo 2026 in Las Vegas from 5-7 May.
