U.S. News and World Report names Providence St. Peter Hospital top Hospital in region, 6th in State. Share via: U.S. News and World Report's 2026-2027 Best Hospitals report named Providence St. Peter Hospital one of the country's best regional hospitals and among the best hospitals in Washington State. St. Peter Hospital also earned 13 High Performing awards and Centralia Hospital earned two High Performing Awards. The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 37th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. "A true testament to our caregivers, providers and our medical group helping bring high-quality compassionate care a reality," said Providence South Puget Sound Chief Executive Darin Goss. "Providence together will have 4 of the top 6 hospitals in the top 10." For the 2026-2027 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 14 specialties and 23 procedures and conditions. Across all 14 specialties, only 178 U.S. hospitals performed well enough to be nationally ranked in 1 or more specialties. "For more than 30 years, U.S. News & World Report's annual Best Hospital rankings has helped guide patients, in consultation with their doctors, to the right hospital when they need care," said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. "These ratings and rankings are based on each hospital's outcomes - how well individuals fare after treatment - as well as other factors that matter to patients, such as the quality of their overall experience and interactions with nursing staff." U.S. News evaluated each hospital's performance using a variety of measures such as survival rates, complication rates, patient experience and level of nursing care. The Best Hospitals methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Heart Association, professional organizations and medical specialists. Providence St. Peter earned "High Performing" ratings for 13 specialties/procedures, in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. "High Performing" is the highest rating U.S. News awards for these types of care. The 13 high performing areas Providence St. Peter was recognized in include: * Best Hospital in Washington (No. 6) and Best Hospital in Olympic Peninsula (No. 1) * Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma * Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair * Aortic Valve Surgery * Colon Cancer Surgery * Gynecological Cancer Surgery * Heart Arrythmia * Heart Attack * Heart Bypass Surgery * Hip Fracture * Lung Cancer Surgery * Pacemaker Implantation * Spinal Fusion * Stroke Share via:

Opinion: New Providence clinic won't necessarily mean better access.

Opinion: New Providence clinic won't necessarily mean better access. | August 27, 2026 12:00 AM Providence St. Joseph Medical Center is investing $31 million in a new rural health clinic in Polson. More space sounds promising, but a new building is not the same as better access. Providence eliminated its walk-in clinic and now offers scheduled same-day appointments. But what happens when those appointments are full? Patients with urgent, non-emergency problems are left waiting for an appointment or using the ER. Not every illness is an emergency, but not every illness can wait weeks either. Providence says the new clinic will accommodate seven primary-care physicians. But "accommodate" does not tell Lake County Leader whether these are seven new providers or existing providers moving into a new building. If Lake County Leader is simply relocating an already limited workforce, how does that increase access? Retention matters, too. Rural communities struggle to keep physicians after short-term service commitments end. Recruitment means little without a plan to keep providers here. Before celebrating 26 exam rooms, its community deserves answers: How many net-new providers are being hired? How will Providence retain them? How many same-day appointments will be available, and what happens when they're full? Access isn't measured in buildings or exam rooms. It's measured by whether a patient can actually get an appointment when they need one. - Camille Daley, Ronan

Helmsley Charitable Trust gives nearly $1.2M to expand lifesaving cardiac care at Providence St. Patrick Hospital.

Helmsley Charitable Trust gives nearly $1.2M to expand lifesaving cardiac care at Providence St. Patrick Hospital. As western Montana grows, the need for fast, advanced cardiac care is becoming increasingly urgent. Providence St. Patrick Hospital is grateful to announce a generous grant of nearly $1.2 million from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to help create a state-of-the-art hybrid operating suite within Providence Heart Institute. The investment comes at a critical time. Demand for complex cardiac procedures continues to be on the rise, creating access challenges for patients facing life-threatening heart conditions. The new hybrid operating suite will bring advanced surgical and catheter-based capabilities together in one highly specialized space, allowing care teams to perform complex procedures more efficiently and respond more quickly when every minute matters. "This hybrid suite will dramatically speed up emergency response times in situations when each second counts," said Walter Panzirer, Trustee of the Helmsley Charitable Trust. "The Helmsley Charitable Trust is excited to help Providence St. Patrick Hospital provide rapid advanced cardiac treatment to patients across western Montana." Located steps from cardiac ICU beds and specialized recovery teams, the hybrid suite will reduce the need to transport critically ill patients between floors for emergent surgical intervention. This integrated environment is designed to improve safety, strengthen workflow, expand procedural capacity, and help ensure patients can receive complex, lifesaving treatment close to home. "We are deeply grateful to the Helmsley Charitable Trust for investing in the health of Montana families in such a meaningful way," said Stephanie Goble, chief philanthropy officer for Providence Montana Health Foundation. "This gift will help us move with urgency to meet a growing need, ensure we continue to say yes to referred patients from partnering hospitals and expand advanced cardiac care. This inspirational investment gives more rural patients the chance to receive lifesaving treatment close to home, surrounded by the people and communities they love." The hybrid operating suite is part of a broader two-phase expansion of the heart institute. Once complete, the project will help St. Pat's serve an additional 1,000 patients annually, decompress the ICU and Emergency Department and strengthen the hospital's No Diversion Program, which supports reliable transfers for emergent patients from rural and critical access hospitals. "Thanks to the generosity of the Helmsley Charitable Trust, St. Pat's is better equipped to respond to urgent cardiac needs today while building a stronger future for heart care in Montana. This gift reflects a shared commitment to bringing high-quality, timely and compassionate care closer to home for the patients and families who need it most," says Providence Montana Chief Executive, Krissy Petersen.
