Requirements
- High school or GED graduation is required.
- Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA is required.
- Basic Life Support certification is required.
- Working knowledge of sterile techniques and applicable special procedures is required.
- Working knowledge of routine and special patient treatment procedures is required.
- Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, health and safety precautions, and infection control procedures is required.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions is required.
- Ability to document and communicate pertinent information is required.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff is required.
- Typing skills and knowledge of Level II and III medical terminology are required.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting and transport stretcher and wheelchair patients may be required.
- Level I requires no experience; Level II requires one year of clinical experience as a Certified Medical Assistant; Level III requires two years; Level IV requires three years.
- One year of experience is provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting.
- Applicants for Levels II, III, and IV must meet the requirements of the Medical Assistant, Certified Ladder Program.
Responsibilities
- Take medical histories and record vital signs.
- Explain treatment procedures to patients and prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
- Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests in the clinic or office.
- Perform electrocardiograms, remove sutures and staples, and change sterile and non-sterile dressings.
- Promote patient and family understanding of educational content and participation in the plan of care.
- Document information in the patient record.
- Dispose of contaminated supplies and process instruments, including high-level disinfection and sterilization of medical instruments.
- Telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy, prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician, and authorize drug refills as directed.
- Perform other clinical functions delegated and supervised by the physician.
- Greet patients, answer telephones, schedule appointments including arrival appointments in MaestroCare, check out patients, and schedule referrals.
- Arrange hospital admissions and laboratory services.
- Update and file patient medical records.
- Complete insurance forms, handle billing and bookkeeping, receive copayments, and collect account balances.
- Handle correspondence and order clinical and clerical supplies and forms.
- Serve as a liaison for clinic activities such as Joint Commission and falls activities and participate in clinic committees when requested.
- Perform daily clinic preparation, registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry.
- Seek out resources independently and work collaboratively at Levels II and III.
Desired Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program is strongly preferred for Level I.
- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools is strongly preferred for Levels II, III, and IV.
