Requirements
- For the nurse practitioner path, a Master's Degree in Nursing from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program is required.
- For the nurse practitioner path, national certification by a recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification center is required.
- For the nurse practitioner path, licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- For the physician assistant path, a Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required.
- For the physician assistant path, graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- For the physician assistant path, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- For the physician assistant path, licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
- The employee must provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the applicable professional licensing or certification authority and hospital privileges.

- The role requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The role requires working closely with others, working protracted or irregular hours, and working around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and plan disposition for immediate post-discharge ambulatory care.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- With hospitalist faculty collaboration or established clinical guidelines and protocols, order additional tests or consultations when appropriate.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests needed before discharge and for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex hospitalized-patient situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate general medicine patients and coordinate ambulatory follow-up, procedures, and tests when applicable.
- Assist in collecting outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use patient-care equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update clinical knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hospitalized patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record according to approved hospital and WVU Medicine policies and documentation standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve improvements in patient outcomes and care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in the cardiology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role in delivering inpatient and ambulatory care to patients and families.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret cardiology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist Hospitalist Faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or hospitalist experience is preferred.
- Advanced Critical Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred, although Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- Master's-level education as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is preferred.
