Requirements
  • At least 15 years of full-time professional experience managing facilities design, or planning and coordinating capital projects covering design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the design, planning, and construction of K-12 educational facilities.
  • A bachelor's degree in architecture or engineering is required.
  • A current California Certificate of Registration as an Architect or Professional Engineer license is required.
  • Ability to direct multiple architects and projects simultaneously and keep decisions moving.
Responsibilities
  • Lead design for the School Upgrade Program and critical repair projects.
  • Own the District's design process for the Facilities Planning and Development Division.
  • Recommend architect assignments from the pre-qualified list and provide clear, consistent direction to design firms.
  • Own the design review process, including quality, value for budgeted dollars, sustainability, and educational and building standards.
  • Review design changes to keep projects within budget, make timely decisions, and maintain legally compliant documentation.
  • Coordinate across District branches and participate in community outreach.
  • Plan, organize, and direct design activities for the upgrade program and critical repair projects.
  • Interface directly with the Division of the State Architect.
  • Manage the District's design process from conception through final review, approval, and handoff to Project Execution.
  • Ensure plans remain within functional, budgetary, environmental, and legal requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in architecture or engineering.
  • Depth in the Division of the State Architect process across approval, backcheck, and certification.
  • Experience building design standards, review processes, and training programs.
