Job Details:

This position reports directly to the Head of Global Trade Compliance (GTC) for the APAC region, overseeing all facets of GTC operations specific to Australia, with potential responsibilities extending to other jurisdictions. The role ensures Cubic Australia’s adherence to complex regulatory frameworks, including the Australian Defence Trade Controls Act (DTCA), ITAR, EAR, Customs Act 1901, and AUKUS requirements. 

The role operates within a high-stakes environment governed by strict defence export controls, including ITAR’s partial exemptions for Australia and the DTCA’s focus on intangible technology transfers. Emphasis is placed on balancing autonomous decision-making with alignment to Cubic’s global compliance strategy. 

Trade compliance professionals prevent legal penalties, ensure supply chain continuity, and enable ethical global market access. Their work directly supports business expansion while maintaining adherence to complex international trade ecosystems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regulatory Compliance & Legal Adherence: Ensure all import/export activities comply with local and international regulations (e.g., ITAR, EAR, DTCA, Customs Act).  Stay updated on evolving trade laws, sanctions, tariffs, and embargoes to mitigate risks of penalties or supply chain disruptions.  Documentation & Record-Keeping: prepare and maintain accurate trade documents (customs declarations, bills of lading, certificates of origin).  Risk Assessment & Mitigation: Identify risks in cross-border transactions (e.g., fraud, sanctions violations) and develop mitigation strategies.  Assist to conduct internal audits and post-entry reviews to ensure compliance.  Undertake jurisdiction classifications for controlled technology.  

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

Stakeholder Collaboration: work with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and internal teams (Legal, Finance, Operations, Security) to streamline compliance.  Conduct employee training on trade regulations and compliance with Cubic GTC policies and procedures.  Advise leadership on regulatory impacts and strategic compliance decisions.  Strategic Process Improvement: Drive efficiency in compliance workflows and resolve gaps in collaboration with cross-functional teams. 

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE:

• 3-5 years’ experience in export controls, compliance and managing compliance approvals.
• 1-2 experience and/or training in jurisdiction classification adjudication.
• Knowledge of legislation governing trade compliance.
• 1-2 years training experience would be beneficial but not required.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

• Mandatory Background checks 
• Security Clearance, minimum Baseline or ability to obtain a Baseline security clearance.
• Employment History Verification:  Validation of prior roles in compliance, logistics, or defence sectors to assess risk. 
• ITAR/EAR Compliance Training
• Domestic Travel: occasionally required to Cubic Australia offices (Brisbane and Townsville)
• International Travel: occasional APAC-region travel (e.g., New Zealand, U.S. Singapore). 
• Mandatory participation in annual training on updates to the Defence Trade Controls Act (DTCA), ITAR, EAR, and AUKUS frameworks. 
• Proof of Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work visa. 
• Adherence to Cubic’s cybersecurity protocols for handling sensitive defence/trade data.
