Requirements
  • Knowledge of applicable principles, laws, rules, regulations, and practices of utility service operations.
  • Knowledge of City practice, policy, and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Graduation with a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a related field, plus three years of experience providing customer service for a utility or another commercial or government organization, or other experience related to the job. Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four years.
  • A criminal background investigation is required.
Responsibilities
  • Review utility usage, determine average consumption, verify rates, investigate potential overcharges, and adjust customer accounts.
  • Initiate and process billing and payment adjustments and account corrections in accordance with established procedures.
  • Reconcile customer accounts, place accounts on hold, assess late fees and charges, and refer customers to other organizations.
  • Review and recommend requirements for subdivision development, re-subdivision, and water and wastewater service extensions.
  • Evaluate site and lot plans, criteria, and related materials for projects, programs, and activities.
  • Assist with assigned utility projects from initiation to completion, and maintain, safeguard, and provide original documents of record.
  • Assist with preparing presentations for arguments representing the utility in hearings, investigations, examinations, and other dispute-resolution settings.
  • Assist with developing, revising, and implementing procedures and processes that facilitate customer services.
  • Support the department's development, maintenance, growth, and customer satisfaction.
  • Perform customer outreach through various communication channels and serve as a point of contact for utility programs.
  • Process new residential water and wastewater permit applications, including establishing service points and setting up service agreements in accordance with operational requirements.
  • Administer and manage the Austin Water Plumber Program, ensuring compliance with applicable procedures and standards.
  • Focus on accurate and efficient account setup and coordination with internal teams.

Austin Water secures $55M low-interest funding for pipe replacement and infrastructure projects

Austin Water has secured $55 million in low-interest funding from the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas for capital improvement projects. The first tranche of $13 million carries an interest rate as low as 2.895%, expected to save upwards of $1.5 million in interest over the 20-year loan period. The funding will primarily replace ageing polybutylene pipes, with $45 million allocated to address water loss from pipes installed until the mid-1980s, saving an estimated $2.7 million in financing costs. An additional $10 million will expand the reclaimed water infrastructure through the Travis Heights Purple Pipe project, connecting two service areas whilst saving approximately $1.1 million. Combined with a recent debt defeasance transaction saving $49.6 million, Austin Water's cumulative savings since 2016 now exceed $675 million.
