Requirements
  • At least 7 years of related experience in residential mortgage loan underwriting or a similar field.
  • A high school diploma is required.
  • Previous leadership experience is required.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the residential mortgage industry in correspondent or retail lending, including sales, operations, capital markets, and other residential mortgage products and services.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable regulatory and legal compliance obligations, rules and regulations, and industry standards and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of mortgage loan products, lending principles, regulatory compliance, and underwriting guidelines, including FHA, VA, and conventional loans, loan processing, and automated underwriting systems.
  • Knowledge of underwriting considerations for self-employed borrowers, partnership and corporation tax-return analysis, appraisal reviews, condominium project reviews, trusts, leasehold, and power-of-attorney documentation.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of mortgage-banking technology, Encompass loan origination systems, core systems, and Microsoft Office products.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage a team of underwriters to achieve production and quality goals.
  • Manage underwriters to ensure mortgage loans are underwritten according to proper guidelines.
  • Ensure team members are fully trained and current on company philosophy and policies and procedures.
  • Manage and review day-to-day tasks escalated by the team.
  • Conduct the underwriting review process to minimize company risk while applying problem-resolution techniques to approve loans.
  • Train, coach, and supervise underwriters in applying company overlays and agency requirements.
  • Evaluate the structure of the underwriting team and plan continuous improvements in efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with other departments.
  • Lead and develop the team through hiring, coaching, performance management, training, and development.
  • Adhere to the Bank’s policies and procedures and all applicable laws, rules, and regulatory and compliance requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Proven experience leading and developing offshore underwriting teams, including performance management, coaching, process optimization, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Advanced speaking and writing communication skills.
  • DE, SAR, or equivalent certification is preferred.
