Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Arts degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience related to the duties of the position are required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the state’s political and community service environment, including community service leaders, partners, organizations, statewide community service needs, legislative leaders, government officials, and major stakeholders.
  • Experience recruiting, managing, and recognizing volunteers is required.
  • Ability to travel locally for up to 50% of work is required.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion by comparing and evaluating courses of conduct and making or recommending decisions.
  • Regular and reliable job attendance is required.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships through respect and understanding of others.
  • Ability to evaluate options independently and make sound decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively in an in-office/open-office environment with moderate noise.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Identify issues of public policy and organizational importance and develop and implement advocacy strategies at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and internal and external partners to achieve the organization’s legislative goals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to develop advocacy campaign communication strategies.
  • Utilize direct-action organizing tactics and grassroots advocacy tools to build constituent support for legislative priorities.
  • Work with staff, volunteers, members, and cross-organization teams to achieve community engagement goals at the state and local levels.
  • Establish a presence in targeted communities by engaging multicultural audiences, developing community partnerships, building volunteer capacity, and designing and executing community programs and events.
  • Represent the organization and its interests to federal, state, and local government agencies and media outlets.
  • Build and maintain relationships with government representatives and elected officials to advance and promote organizational goals.
  • Establish strategic community partnerships and leverage internal and external resources to raise the organization’s visibility within communities.
  • Develop and communicate persuasive narratives aligned with organizational priorities to diverse audiences.
  • Represent the organization in public-facing settings to the media, the public, and members.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert on the state office’s advocacy issues using data and input from diverse stakeholders.
  • Produce written reports and convene public meetings to disseminate findings, share best practices, and advance solutions through relevant communication channels.
  • Recruit, train, develop, and deploy volunteers in accordance with organizational goals.
  • Align volunteers’ interests with organizational priorities, support volunteer needs, design engagement opportunities, and incorporate volunteer perspectives into strategic planning.
  • Collaborate with management to identify process-streamlining opportunities and develop procedures that support the business unit or department.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous government relations and grassroots organizing experience is strongly preferred.
  • Preference is given to San Jose residents and candidates with experience working in local or state government.
