The State Bar of Texas is a government agency in the Texas judicial system that supports the legal field by offering educational programs for lawyers and the public, administering the mandatory continuing legal education (CLE) for attorneys, and managing the attorney discipline process. It runs courses, seminars, and other materials to improve legal knowledge and public understanding, and it handles complaints and investigations to enforce ethics rules and sanction misconduct. The bar is different from private or voluntary legal associations because it operates as an official state agency with regulatory authority over lawyers and a focus on public protection. Its goal is to ensure lawyers stay educated, uphold professional standards, and maintain public trust in the legal system.

What believers are saying

  • 2026 board updates say combined reserves rose $9 million, strengthening financial flexibility.
  • Membership dues and TexasBarCLE revenue still anchor a roughly $58 million budget.
  • The 2026 Houston annual meeting and section programming keep the bar highly relevant.

What critics are saying

  • The February 2025 ransomware breach exposed SSNs, IDs, and financial data for 2,700 people.
  • INC Ransom leaked samples in March 2025, damaging trust with members and judges.
  • The 1415 Lavaca build can distract management and strain reserves if costs rise.

What makes State Bar of Texas unique

  • Texas’s mandatory bar governs over 100,000 attorneys statewide.
  • Its CLE and section network makes it the profession’s central Texas legal platform.
  • The 1415 Lavaca project would add a rare downtown Austin education campus.
