Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required for Laboratory Assistant I.
  • For Laboratory Assistant II, at least one year of experience is required, unless replaced by a Bachelor’s or Associate degree in a clinical or related science field, enrollment with at least two semesters completed in an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a clinical or related science field including introductory biology or chemistry, or American Society for Clinical Pathology Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant certification.
  • The role requires safe handling of potentially infectious blood, body fluids, body tissues, and other patient specimens in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • The role requires successful completion of initial and periodic competency assessments for assigned job functions.
  • The role requires completion of departmental continuing education requirements.
  • Required skills include computer literacy, laboratory equipment operation, laboratory information systems, laboratory services, laboratory supply and inventory management, and communication.

Responsibilities
  • Assess, accession, and process patient specimens in preparation for testing in various sections of Laboratory Medicine.
  • Assess the suitability and acceptability of patient specimens and reject unacceptable specimens according to established protocols.
  • Match order information with specimen information to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
  • Accession and result specimens according to procedure using the appropriate computer application.
  • Assign billing numbers, location codes, and physician numbers correctly.
  • Verify physician orders when test requests are unclear.
  • Prepare specimens as appropriate, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and labeling.
  • Deliver prepared specimens to the appropriate testing area in a timely manner.
  • Apply laboratory programs to store specimens and locate, retrieve, and process specimens for additional testing as requested.
  • Maintain computer logs, quality control, disinfection procedures, and assigned departmental duties.
  • Manage phone inquiries and provide information regarding specimen collection, transport, and patient results as appropriate.
  • Assist with training and orienting new employees.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
  • Assist with packaging, ordering, and referral of specimens to reference laboratories in compliance with United States Department of Transportation and commercial carrier regulations.
  • Troubleshoot missing specimens and other preanalytical errors, including courier log review and specimen archives.
  • Maintain equipment, participate in the established preventative maintenance program, and alert the supervisor to equipment problems.
  • Handle, store, and maintain supplies properly and notify the supervisor when inventory is low.
  • Perform testing processes within the scope of laboratory assistant duties when appropriate, and complete related training to maintain competency.
