Requirements
  • A college or university degree in a related field is required.
  • At least 7 years of work experience in a related job discipline is required.
  • Experience with the administration of academic medicine, especially cancer services, is preferred.
  • Experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity within a healthcare organization or academic medical center is preferred.
  • Experience negotiating on behalf of a unit to accomplish goals such as salaries and budgets is preferred.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing programs is preferred.
  • Knowledge of financial, management, and operational functions in clinical, educational, and research settings is preferred.
  • Expertise monitoring, analyzing, and forecasting section performance using productivity, financial, efficiency, patient satisfaction, employee engagement, and access key performance indicators is preferred.
  • Strength developing financial pro formas and reviewing their accuracy for future pro forma development is preferred.
  • Computing skills sufficient to use diverse managerial and administrative computer applications are preferred.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles is preferred.
  • General knowledge of billing and collection is preferred.
  • Knowledge of major federal awards and/or clinical trials operations is preferred.
  • Strategic leadership, project management, supervisory, analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, organizational, quantitative, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills are preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and maintain confidentiality is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of accountability for the Section’s financial performance.
  • Manage implementation, direction, and policy development for finance, professional fee billing, grants and contracts, human resources, facility operations, and fellowship training programs.
  • Develop or direct accounting systems and procedures to optimize income and control expenditures.
  • Provide the section chief and departmental administration with regular financial analysis and reports.
  • Conduct or direct special studies related to financial management and accounting.
  • Direct preparation of the section’s operating budget and develop estimates for staff and faculty salaries, recovery, and non-salary expenditures.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the section chief, faculty members, and departmental administration.
  • Identify chargeable professional-fee tests and procedures, ensure billing-data integrity, monitor professional-fee report accuracy, and assess billing effectiveness.
  • Assist in managing clinical operations, including billing, credentialing, and physician compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Work with physician leaders and institutional administration to address clinical operations issues affecting ambulatory practice, hospital operations, and other clinical activities.
  • Manage payroll and personnel activities for all employees, including assisting the Section Chief with faculty members.
  • Authorize new hires, terminations, layoffs, leaves of absence, and merit increases.
  • Establish systems supporting fair and effective recruitment, hiring, evaluation, promotion, disciplinary action, and discharge practices.
  • Direct and supervise section support staff; hire, train, develop, take corrective action, and evaluate subordinates.
  • Make recommendations on compensation and incentive payments consistent with the department compensation plan.
  • Participate in faculty recruitment and ensure timely and accurate processing of faculty appointments and promotions.
  • Participate with the Section Chief in developing plans for future faculty and staff needs and identifying resources for their support.
  • Assist faculty in pursuing grants and awards for research, education, and clinical activities.
  • Communicate grant opportunities to faculty and facilitate timely grant-application submission.
  • Participate in developing and implementing fundraising plans.
  • Manage section space, facilities, and equipment, including renovations, moves, maintenance, and ongoing facilities operations.
  • Direct renovation or redistribution of section space, maintain related records, and coordinate activity with appropriate institutional offices.
  • Develop, implement, and administer policies and procedures and monitor compliance with university fiscal, academic, and human-resources policies and procedures.
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and maintaining computer hardware and software supporting section activities and goals.
  • Ensure systems are compatible with existing department, division, and university operating systems and software.
  • Facilitate collection, compilation, and analysis of data for routine and special projects.
  • Participate on departmental, divisional, and university committees.
  • Establish department priorities, allocate resources, and execute strategic plans.
  • Manage non-medical departmental activities and advise on policy development and implementation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced degree such as MHA, MHSA, MBA, HSM, or a relevant field.
  • Experience administering academic medicine, especially cancer services.
  • Administrative or supervisory experience within healthcare or an academic medical center.
  • Experience negotiating salaries, budgets, or similar matters on behalf of a unit.
  • Expertise administering and financing clinical research, including federal trials and industry or privately sponsored programs.
  • Expertise liaising with medical centers, hospitals, or service lines within a highly matrixed academic organization.
