Requirements
  • An Associate’s degree is required.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, with strong verbal and written skills in both languages, is required.
  • Completion of a 40-hour training course in medical interpreting is required.
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide interpreting services for University of Rochester Medical Center clinical and professional staff, patients, and accompanying family members or significant others.
  • Manage communication flow autonomously and efficiently between source and target languages during medical and non-medical healthcare encounters across inpatient and ambulatory clinical specialties.
  • Respond to hospital pager assignments within established timeframes and provide services across varied shifts, including required weekend on-call coverage.
  • Interpret prescheduled and pager-received assignments in a timely and professional manner in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Assess encounter goals and situational context in collaboration with clinical healthcare providers and non-clinical hospital staff.
  • Choose communication ground rules and methods, explain the interpreter’s role, and brief healthcare professionals on relevant knowledge about the patient or encounter.
  • Assess and recommend communication methods for patients with communication barriers, altered mental status, or other special communication needs, and verify the patient’s preferred language.
  • Select the appropriate interpreting mode, including consecutive, simultaneous, or sight translation.
  • Propose the most suitable service-delivery modality, including in-person, video, or telephone interpreting.
  • Debrief healthcare professionals after encounters as necessary to improve understanding and provide linguistic and cultural insights.
  • Monitor for linguistic misunderstandings and recommend adjustments to formality and style.
  • Prioritize, triage, and respond to multiple service requests according to critical urgency and patient acuity.
  • Support cultural responsiveness by assessing cross-cultural effects on verbal and nonverbal communication during complex interpersonal encounters.
  • Monitor and address cultural misunderstandings to empower patients to participate in care decisions.
  • Confirm possible cultural misunderstandings with all parties to avoid assumptions, disrespect, or harm.
  • Facilitate understanding of cultural differences and promote direct communication to build trust and patient satisfaction.
  • Inform patients about available support services when appropriate.
  • Promote inclusive and equitable communication during interactions with all parties.
  • Contribute as a language and culture specialist to clinical and non-clinical healthcare teams operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Provide interdisciplinary education to team members to support effective communication during encounters, patient training, and teaching.
  • Facilitate meaningful access to healthcare programs for patients with limited English proficiency while supporting applicable legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
  • Identify interpreting-service needs based on patient-provider dynamics and best practices, and inform program leadership of service-enhancement recommendations.
  • Apply national healthcare interpreter ethics and standards of practice, Joint Commission standards, department policies, safety protocols, and infection-control standards.
  • Complete service-provision documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Disclose and justify potential limitations, conflicts, or needs for recusal appropriately and promptly.
  • Protect patient confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
  • Intervene impartially and transparently within professional boundaries to protect the autonomy, dignity, and safety of all parties.
  • Maintain interpreter performance-based skills assessed at hire or through direct observation.
  • Participate in professional growth and development through webinars, conferences, annual training, and self-directed learning.
  • Complete mandatory annual policy and procedure training, annual health updates, staff meetings, and other required training activities.
  • Complete documentation, paperwork, administrative duties, electronic-record entries, database entries, certification updates, professional-development transcripts, and other assigned paperwork.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • One year of interpreting experience in a healthcare setting is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical tests, and procedures in the working languages is strongly preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills are strongly preferred.
  • Healthcare interpreting certification through CCHI or IMIA is strongly preferred at hire or within 18 months of hire.
  • Translation certification is preferred.
