Requirements
- An Associate Degree is required for the Senior Professional level.
- An Associate Degree is required for the Advanced Professional level.
- At least 6 years of relevant experience is required for the Senior Professional level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 4 years of relevant experience is required for the Advanced Professional level, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- AALAS certification is required within one year of hire.
- Continuing education credits must be maintained to retain licensure or certification.
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Applicants must complete the Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
Responsibilities
- Observe animals and report signs of pain, distress, abnormalities, sickness, or injury using independent judgment to assess the need for veterinary intervention.
- Administer treatments to animals at the direction of the veterinarian.
- Perform specialized and complex research procedures and data collection.
- Deliver and monitor anesthesia and assist with preparing laboratory animals for surgery.
- Assist with animal restraint, treatments, sample collections, and medical treatments.
- Coordinate and provide hands-on training to research staff, animal care staff, and students under the direction of the Director of Training.
- Demonstrate and train others in basic experimental procedures, aseptic technique, monitoring animals under anesthesia, animal restraint, and equipment use.
- Assist with setting up and tearing down training classes, ordering supplies, and preparing instruments and equipment for training sessions.
- Contribute to maintaining animal program compliance with federal regulations.
- Anesthetize, prepare, and monitor animals undergoing specialized imaging procedures such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound imaging according to standardized standard operating procedures.
- Support research projects by performing standardized experimental manipulations such as oral gavage, drug administration, sample collection, and data collection.
- Maintain an inventory of drugs and supplies, including ordering, auditing stock for expiration, and filling requests.
- Assist staff with preparing the operating room, washing and assembling surgical instrument packs, and testing and maintaining anesthesia and other equipment.
- Assist veterinary staff with herd health maintenance, including vaccinations, anthelmintic treatments, hoof trimming, and other procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of time and effort and the cost of materials, drugs, and supplies for chargebacks and annual cost analysis.
- Work potential weekend and evening shifts.
Desired Qualifications
- Certification as a veterinary or laboratory animal technologist, such as Certified Veterinary Technician or Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist, with 7 years of relevant experience is preferred.
