Requirements
  • Certifications through the AVO Training Institute or another accredited institution or trade school in Medium Voltage Transformer Levels I and II; Switch Gear and Circuit Breaker Maintenance with grounding and bonding; Electrical Safety for Utilities; and Substation Maintenance I and II, either already obtained or completed through training upon hiring.
  • Familiarity with high-voltage test equipment and the ability to understand its results.
  • At least 5 years of experience in electrical, electronic, and/or network communications.
  • At least 5 years of experience with medium-voltage equipment.
  • Prior experience with cold-weld patch repairs and field transformer repairs.
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours occasionally to support service customer contracts.
  • Required weekend and/or night work may be necessary depending on customer requirements at the site.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Ability to interface directly with German counterparts for technical assistance and guidance on medium-voltage systems and attend meetings with them daily or weekly.
  • Ability to travel significantly domestically and internationally.
  • Ability to travel, stand, walk, talk, hear, observe surroundings, and routinely lift up to 50 pounds, with occasional sitting, reaching above the shoulder, stooping, bending, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Ability to work in a field service environment with occasional corporate-office functions and exposure to electrical hazards and extreme weather temperatures.
Responsibilities
  • Handle medium-voltage escalations for SMA customers and suppliers and partner with the medium-voltage engineering team in SMA AG to develop solutions for U.S. customers and suppliers.
  • Perform warranty repairs, technical support, and extensive testing of the internal workings of SMA medium-voltage products.
  • Test medium-voltage transformer cores; troubleshoot, repair, and analyze SMA large-scale medium-voltage systems in the field; perform operations and maintenance; and conduct site visits.
  • Apply expert knowledge and training with high-voltage test equipment to identify root causes for SMA internal quality 8D reports.
  • Develop detailed knowledge to aid in creating processes and procedures for SMA medium-voltage products and associated SMA or third-party accessories sold by SMA.
  • Determine appropriate courses of action after conducting dissolved gas analysis sampling and obtaining results from dissolved gas analysis reports.
  • Maintain accurate inventory counts of spare parts provided by SMA.
  • Repair external leaks and cold-weld patches on medium-voltage transformers.
  • Work regularly with high-voltage direct current, three-phase power, high alternating current voltage, and related SMA product software and firmware.
  • Maintain customer satisfaction while working to reduce field-service expenditures.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the Global Service Organization, Quality, and suppliers to provide customers with root-cause analyses of failures and keep customers informed of root-cause-analysis status.
  • Perform and maintain maintenance activities in accordance with the SMA product maintenance manual at assigned sites subject to SMA customer contractual obligations.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in a technical field.
  • Experience with pad-mounted transformers, medium-voltage terminations, and operation of switchgear.
  • Knowledge of solar and/or alternative energy markets.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code.
  • Advanced knowledge of power-plant measurement devices and techniques.
