Responsibilities
  • Work with all clients at The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope.
  • Receive residential guests, visitors, service and delivery personnel, employees, and other entrants cordially while following Centre policies and procedures.
  • Provide a secure, clean, and comfortable environment for clients, staff, and visitors in person or by phone.
  • Work as a member of the Halifax Centre of Hope team in support of its ministry.
  • Ensure support aligns with the Centre of Hope’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Work according to Centre of Hope policies, procedures, and philosophy of practice.
  • Collaborate with other shelter staff within the Halifax Regional Municipality.
  • Advocate with community agencies to address clients’ needs and barriers.
  • Complete and maintain records, assessments, daily statistics, and files while protecting confidentiality.
  • Participate in Centre of Hope projects, activities, and internal committees.
  • Provide a supportive environment and foster a therapeutic milieu that promotes empowerment.
  • Maintain building security during each shift.
  • Use the camera security system and panic alarm, assist with building security, and report functional problems to the Residential Coordinator.
  • Provide emergency and fire-procedure coverage under the Fire Plan, including additional responsibilities when the Fire Coordinator is absent.
  • Conduct active security checks during evening and night shifts according to policy standards.
  • Distribute medication at assigned times and log all exchanges.
  • Clear and lock dormitories by 8:00 a.m.
  • Distribute residents’ mail while maintaining privacy and security.
  • Complete after-hours client intake and the required documentation.
  • Administer client meal tickets.
  • Clean and maintain the front desk area, Hub, offices, entrances, hallways, stairs, and other common areas as required.
  • Launder towels and clean special accidents when regular cleaning staff are unavailable.
  • Ensure desk equipment and supplies are present and operational at the end of the shift.
  • Arrange transportation of donations to the second floor and record donations in the donation logbook.
  • Answer telephone calls and direct them to the appropriate person.
  • Ensure the television is off and activities do not occur in the TV lounge during Chapel Services or general Chapel use.
  • Maintain detailed notes in the logbook.
  • Keep required journals, registers, sheets, cards, and client records updated, accurate, and orderly.
  • Handle cash transactions for meals and cash donations when applicable.
  • Complete janitorial duties such as mopping floors, cleaning washrooms, dusting, window cleaning, removing garbage and recycling, and stocking washrooms when the cleaner is unavailable.
  • Support occasional after-hours special events and Chapel programs.
Desired Qualifications
  • A 1–2 year certificate program in Social/Human Services or another relevant certificate program, or a combination of education and experience.
  • One to three years of experience working with at-risk and homeless persons in case management and advocacy.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Suicide Intervention (ASSIST), Standard First Aid, and Centre of Hope medication training, or a commitment to obtain these within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of homelessness, mental health, and/or addictions.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
