This is an exciting opportunity leading an environmental laboratory testing and support team. The Lead Chemist will assist with the performance of established chemical analyses, instrument calibrations and maintenance, and data interpretation and validation in Chelmsford, MA.

Our skilled scientists collaborate with EPA staff at their state-of-the-art Laboratory Services and Applied Science Division (LSASD) in Chelmsford, MA, Edison, NJ, Ft. Meade, MD, and Chicago IL. Here you’ll be part of the Environmental Service Assistance Team helping the EPA achieve their mission to protect human health and the environment.

In this role, you will:

• Lead analytical chemists using Organic EPA methods
  • Volitile Organic Analysis
  • Natural Attenuation parameters (Methane, Ethane, Ethene)
  • Pesticides/Aroclor Extraction, Clean-up and Analyses
• Lead analytical chemists using Organic EPA methods
  • Metals Digestion and Analyses (ICP-AES/ICP-MS)
  • Mercury Digestion and Analyses
  • Cyanide Digestion and Analysis
  • Alkalinity
  • Totals Suspended Solids (TSS)
  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
  • Total/Volitile Solids
  • Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
  • Nutrients
  • Hexavalent Chromium
  • Particle Size
• Conduct organic/inorganic analyses and calibrate instruments
• Interpret, validate, and upload data to LIMS
• Maintain lab operations, inventory, and quality standards
• Monitor workflow and performance metrics
• Perform peer reviews, SOP audits, and corrective actions

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have: 

• BS/BA in Chemistry or related field from an accredited university

• 8+ years in an environmental laboratory and/or using EPA methods. (6 years with an MS, 4 years with a Ph.D)

• 5+ years managing analytical chemists
• Expertise in Organic and Inorganic prep, analyses, and data review (listed above)
• Proficient in Microsoft Office 365
• Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills
• Must be able to work on-site at the Edison, NJ, Laboratory Monday through Friday. This position does not offer any Hybrids work schedules at this time. 
• Ability to obtain EPA Public Trust

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends if required
• Must be able to work standing for long periods
• Must be able to work inside a chemical laboratory and handle chemicals
• Must be able to wear all PPE (personal protective equipment)

Additional desired experience and skills:

• OSHA HAZWOPER 40-Hour certification
• 2+ years as an organic and/or inorganic chemist or lab technician
• First Aid/CPR/AED certification

In compliance with state and local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $78,073.24 to $130,122.06; however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
