Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant credential is required.
  • Certification by one of the listed governing associations is required: National Healthcareer Association, American Medical Technologists, American Association of Medical Assistants, National Association of Health Professionals, National Center for Competency Testing, American Allied Health, or American Medical Certification Association.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 6 months.
  • Perform communication, customer service, multitasking, and teamwork activities.
  • Travel may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and clinical support for physicians and other providers in the outpatient setting under the provider's direction.
  • Prepare patients, collect and review pertinent information, perform technical duties, document using the electronic medical record, and support a safe patient environment.
  • Provide administrative and clerical support, including patient scheduling, filing reports, and following up on documentation, phone calls, and billing inquiries.
  • Use the rooming tool in the electronic medical record to document the patient's reason for visit, weight, vital signs, visit screening information, medication review, and pertinent information for the provider.
  • Set up examination and treatment rooms between cases.
  • Assist patients in preparing for provider visits while maintaining patient safety and privacy.
  • Perform electrocardiograms, wound dressings, and support providers during minor surgical procedures and ancillary examinations.
  • Prepare and administer medications according to policy and procedure after knowledge validation and competency demonstration; intravenous medications may not be administered.
  • Complete patient tests and treatments according to provider orders, policy, and procedure after knowledge validation and competency demonstration.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and complete associated paperwork accurately and efficiently.
  • Perform phlebotomy and assist with designated laboratory functions related to testing, reporting, and laboratory specimen quality assurance under laboratory oversight.
  • Perform receptionist and clerical duties, including matching and filing ancillary, consultation, and other medical reports in patients' medical records.
  • Document in the appropriate sections to create complete and accurate medical records.
  • Use the electronic medical record and designated scheduling system.
  • Facilitate timely patient appointments and complete referrals and pre-authorizations as needed.
  • Collect co-payments.
  • Assist with orientation of new personnel under the direction of the provider or site lead.
  • Execute and document ongoing patient communication, prioritize communications to the provider, and respond to patient questions and requests.
  • Reinforce patient education as directed by the provider.
  • Inventory non-controlled medical, surgical, and pharmaceutical supplies as needed; verify expiration dates, document utilization, and optimize supply organization and space utilization.
  • Access and transport non-controlled medications as necessary to meet clinic or unit needs.
  • Prepare and clean instruments.
  • Follow sterilization and disinfection protocols, including high-level disinfection of instruments and equipment.
  • Clean and set up examination rooms between patients using infection-prevention protocols.
  • Follow hand hygiene and appropriate infection-prevention precautions.
  • Inspect diagnostic equipment and instrumentation and identify preventive or corrective maintenance needs.
  • Participate in patient safety and quality-improvement programs.

  • Graduation from a specialty training program is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of related work experience is preferred.
