About This Position
The HV Engineer will be accountable for the HV design, EPC design coordination for HV & MV, utility interconnection coordination during the development, financing, construction, and commissioning phases of the renewable facilities (solar, wind, battery storage, etc). The candidate will also be responsible for providing technical support to the operation team.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Develop and review preliminary HV transmission and substation design, MV distribution preliminary designs, and single-line creation of the HV facilities.
- Participate in recurring meetings with the interconnecting utility to discuss and address technical items during the development and execution stages.
- Collaborate with the EoR, OE, IE, EPC, or any other external consultants and vendors to work collaboratively on the design, optimization, and review of the facility during the design and execution phases.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of technical specifications, design criteria, standards, and exhibits (EPC technical exhibits, testing protocols, vendor specifications, etc.) to ensure all documentation is comprehensive and maintains a high-quality product
- Maintain and improve upon the existing engineering tools for design, analysis, and calculation
- Aid in EPC RFP and commercial supply agreements to ensure technical requirements are accurately defined and reflected while ensuring lower LCOE
- Work towards becoming the HV technical lead for IE diligence and project financing
- Work cross functionally between development, land, permitting, engineering, construction, and operation teams
- Ensure timely and cost-effective resolution to regulatory, permitting, and technical issues associated with the execution and delivery of the facility
- Ensure the highest level of environmental health and safety standards in all engineering with aspects of the facility
Qualifications and Skills
- Strong understanding of HV transmission, substation equipment, MV distribution, metering, relaying, and SCADA/plant controllers.
- Technical expertise in power system design and studies.
- Experience managing interconnection study processes in ERCOT and CAISO, reviewing and challenging study results.
- Highly organized with effective project management skills.
- Advanced knowledge of steady-state modeling tools like ETAP, SKP, and DigSILENT.
- Proficient in Excel.
- Practical experience working with EPCs and utilities during design and construction phases.
- Basic understanding of technology trade-offs, system design optimization, cost drivers, and construction challenges.
Experience
- Minimum 5 years managing HV work or interconnection of utility-scale renewable projects for a developer or consultant (IE/OE) or in EPC HV design.
- Experience creating specifications/designs for HV transmission and substation equipment or contracting/construction of HV transmission and substations.
- Led 5+ projects through CAISO, ERCOT, or SPP interconnection processes, with experience in multiple markets and in the implementation phase (pre-EPC through COD)

- Mostly sedentary work; using standard office equipment including: a computer, keyboard, and telephone.
- Position requires some travel for company-wide meetups: ~5 weeks total through a calendar year, plus additional travel required for site visits. *Full COVID-19 vaccination required to be eligible for travel.

- Salary: USD90,000 - $120,000 base salary with 20% annual target bonus
