Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience as a medical coder are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, Current Procedural Terminology, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, and medical terminology and anatomy is required.
Responsibilities
  • Abstract and analyze medical documentation and assign appropriate procedural terminology and medical codes in accordance with applicable coding rules and policies.
  • Analyze, enter, and manipulate databases.
  • Review codes created by electronic charge capture and assign codes through medical record documentation in accordance with recognized coding guidelines.
  • Review and resolve coding denials and claims errors related to improper coding, providing feedback for correction and follow-up.
  • Abstract data, review codes for accuracy, perform system edit checks, and correct errors as needed.
  • Respond to coding information requests from internal and external sources.
  • Communicate documentation-improvement opportunities and coding issues to providers, departments, and designated leaders for follow-up and resolution.
  • Consult with internal customers and external vendors to obtain specificity or clarification when documentation is inconsistent or incomplete.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or a health-related field is preferred.
  • Additional coding experience in the area of assignment is preferred.
  • AHIMA accreditation examination for Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician, or Certified Coding Specialist is preferred.
  • Certified Professional Coder certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders or Certified Medical Coder certification from Practice Management Institute is preferred.
