Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • Must complete all applicable state licensure, education, and training requirements.
  • Must successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program and CPR certification for continued employment.
  • Must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting or lowering solutions and equipment.
  • Must pass the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment, subject to reasonable accommodation consideration.
  • Must be available for full-time scheduling Monday through Saturday, including early morning starts and every other Saturday.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Provide patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, vascular access, treatment options, and home dialysis under appropriate supervision.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain and document pre-treatment and post-treatment vital signs, weights, and vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, provide prescribed interventions, and monitor patients’ responses to dialysis therapy.
  • Complete treatment discontinuation, reinfusion, hemostasis, dressing application, discharge evaluation, and documentation according to established procedures.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks and required pretreatment alarm testing.
  • Record accurate and timely vital signs, treatment parameters, treatment sheets, progress notes, and other patient-treatment information.
  • Report significant information, changes in patient condition, unusual findings, and intervention responses to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and collect, label, prepare, store, and arrange courier collection of laboratory specimens.
  • Clean blood spills and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment; assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient-care staff under nurse supervision.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and environmentally appropriate clinical area.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities, infection-control audits, infection-control practices, and patient and family education.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application and review treatment sheets and charts for completeness and corrections.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile required paperwork.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to ensure disciplines are scheduled according to each patient’s care plan.
  • Support patient understanding of home dialysis products, home dialysis benefits, treatment options, and peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit and assist with transition to the patient’s selected dialysis modality.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations, with possible travel to regional, business-unit, and corporate meetings.
