Biogen beats estimates as new medicines overtake multiple sclerosis business. 29 Jul 2026, 11:33 pm Pedestrians walk past Biogen Inc headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Biogen CEO Christopher Viehbacher said in a statement, noting that sales of the company's newer medicines now exceed those of its older multiple sclerosis franchise. (July 29): Biogen Inc reported quarterly revenue and adjusted earnings that beat analysts' expectations as sales of newly acquired kidney and eye-disease drugs helped offset declining revenue from multiple sclerosis medicines. The company raised its revenue outlook for the year, saying sales are now expected to grow by a mid-single-digit percentage instead of declining by a mid-single-digit percentage as previously forecast. However, Biogen lowered its adjusted earnings guidance to reflect acquisition-related costs and milestone payments. Under chief executive officer Christopher Viehbacher, Biogen has gone on an aggressive acquisition strategy to expand beyond its historic neurology focus and come up with sources of new growth to replace the company's ageing portfolio of multiple sclerosis drugs. That has brought it into new therapeutic areas such as kidney disease and immunology. The exclusive allure of owning the shore Minor International's Anantara Desaru Coast Residences, the first beachfront branded residences in Malaysia, offer fully furnished villas with stunning sea views and access to resort facilities, blending luxury living with sustainability. Biogen has made "significant progress" repositioning the company for growth, Viehbacher said in a statement, noting that sales of the company's newer medicines now exceed those of its older multiple sclerosis franchise, whose revenues continue to decline. Sales of Leqembi for Alzheimer's disease, a key drug that the company sells through a partnership with Eisai Co, grew 15% in the quarter to US$184 million (RM752.03 million), roughly in line with analyst expectations. Biogen's solid results were "driven by a good quarter across the majority of its key growth products," RBC Capital Markets analyst Brian Abrahams said in a note to clients. Biogen shares rose 4.7% at 9.40am in New York. The shares had increased 17% this year through the close of trading on Tuesday, outpacing the S&P 500 Index. In May, the company closed its US$5.6 billion acquisition of Apellis Pharmaceuticals Inc, whose portfolio includes Syfovre for an immune disorder that causes blindness and Empaveli for a rare blood disorder and certain rare kidney diseases. The two medications brought in almost US$128 million in revenue to Biogen during the remainder of the quarter, the company said. Biogen lowered its adjusted earnings forecast for the year to US$12 to US$13 a share from US$14.25 to US$15.25, reflecting expected charges for acquired research and development, milestone payments and financing costs related to the Apellis deal. Excluding those items, the company's underlying earnings outlook would have increased by 60 cents a share, Biogen said. Biogen announced in June that it would acquire RayThera Inc, a closely held developer of immunology drugs, for as much as US$1 billion. Several other newer medicines also posted strong quarterly growth. Sales of Zurzuvae, a treatment for postpartum depression, jumped 53% to US$71 million, while Skyclarys, for the rare disease Friedreich's ataxia, climbed to about US$168 million, beating analysts' expectations. Biogen reported second-quarter results exceeding Wall Street expectations, with revenue rising 3% year-over-year to $2.74 billion, above the $2.47 billion consensus estimate. Adjusted earnings reached $3.60 per share, beating forecasts of $2.89. The company's Growth Portfolio generated $1.06 billion in revenue, up 24% and surpassing its multiple sclerosis franchise for the first time. Alzheimer's treatment Leqembi recorded $184 million in global sales, whilst Skyclarys revenue jumped 29% to $168 million and Zurzuvae climbed 53% to $71 million. Biogen raised its 2026 underlying earnings guidance to $15.85–$16.85 per share, up from $15.25–$16.25 previously. The company expects full-year revenue to increase by a mid-single-digit percentage.
