Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Clinical Laboratory Scientist license program is required.
  • Doctoral-level Scientists must have at least 1 year of experience; master's-level Scientists must have at least 2 years of experience; baccalaureate-level Scientists must have at least 4 years of experience.
  • At least 4 years of experience in an acute care facility setting is required.
  • Zero to 2 years of experience in a senior or supervising capacity is required.
  • Prior senior or supervisory experience must include specialized and complex analysis, computer experience, quality control, calibration, quality-control evaluation, inventory control, preventive maintenance, and quality improvement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Leading and guidance skills are required.
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist certification or qualification is required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training for Los Angeles City is required; if no card is held upon hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration.
Responsibilities
  • Perform and supervise manual, semi-automated, and automated assays while maintaining accuracy and productivity.
  • Recognize normal, abnormal, and critical results and take appropriate action, including age-related patient considerations.
  • Monitor and maintain adequate supply levels for the assigned laboratory section.
  • Perform clerical and computer functions and additional clinical and clerical duties as needed by the department and hospital staff.
  • Obtain specimens from designated patients as necessary.
  • Follow established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional growth through continuing education sessions and participate in the department’s quality assurance program and meetings.
  • Instruct and orient new employees and complete orientation checklists.
  • Communicate day-to-day section operations and implemented changes to employees.
  • Evaluate new technical procedures and assure their accuracy and implementation in the section.
  • Manage and monitor quality-control data and ensure timely calibration and preventive maintenance.
  • Provide input to annual performance-appraisal reviews for staff rotating through the section.
  • Assist with employee commendations, counseling, interviewing, and selection.
  • Assist the department in meeting accreditation requirements established by licensing agencies.
  • Reinforce personal protective equipment use and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Coordinate and integrate department services across intradepartmental, interdepartmental, and hospital-wide levels.
  • Plan service provision by maintaining appropriate levels of qualified and competent staff and supporting policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain performance-improvement and quality-control activities for the department and hospital.
  • Provide staff orientation, training, and continuing education.
  • Monitor space and resource requirements and the use of outside resources.
  • Ensure results are available within defined turnaround-time guidelines.
  • Follow safety and infection-control guidelines and use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Cover the laboratory during emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
  • Maintain an English-speaking environment in all work areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Clinical Laboratory Specialist in Chemistry certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology or American Society for Clinical Pathology certification in Microbiology.
