Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two to five years of experience with stick, tungsten inert gas, and metal inert gas welding in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow basic blueprints, engineering drawings, bills of material, written instructions, and procedures.
  • Ability to use industry standards for equipment setup and efficient operation.
  • Knowledge of welding gases and their appropriate uses, metallic arc welding, inert gas welding, electrodes, oven treatment, metals, contours, angles, and stress tolerances.
  • Ability to operate typical shop equipment, power tools, overhead cranes, and fork trucks.
  • Ability to inspect welded joints and assemblies using micrometers, calipers, tape measures, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Proficiency in adjusting metal inert gas welders to the proper amperage and voltage for various sizes of flux-cored wire.
  • Ability to perform vertical and horizontal multiple-pass fillet welding using flux-cored and solid welding wire.
  • Ability to interpret welding prints to determine weld type and placement.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate weld wire and gas for different metals and welding wires.
  • Ability to use air, power, and hand tools, especially torches and grinders.
  • Ability to preheat parts and stress-relieve finished components.
  • Ability to work safely, meet time and quality standards, and follow established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide personal welder tools and trade equipment.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical exertion, including stooping, bending, twisting, climbing, and working in confined areas.
  • Ability to wear a positive-pressure welding hood when required.
Responsibilities
  • Weld metal parts together using gas welding, brazing, and arc welding processes.
  • Perform thermal cutting and grinding.
  • Repair broken or cracked parts, fill holes, and weld overlay metal parts.
  • Locate cracks using dye penetrant non-destructive testing methods and repair cracks in large fabrications when required.
  • Position and set up components for weld repairs and fabrication.
  • Lay out parts and assemblies according to specifications and create templates and work aids to hold and align parts.
  • Rig cranes and fixture parts for welding.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, and overhead positions while adjusting amperage, voltage, and speed to achieve the required weld deposit.
  • Inspect grooves, angles, gap allowances, and related assembly aspects for conformance to specifications.
  • Perform quality checks using inspection tools and devices.
  • Coordinate work with other team members and function independently within the team's daily activities.
  • Operate overhead cranes to position or move work pieces.
