  • Graduate of an AHIMA-accredited medical coding program.
  • Must pass DCH’s coding proficiency assessment for coders.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and coursework in anatomy and physiology are required.
  • Some computer or computerized encoder experience is required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is required.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Must be able to work eight hours quietly at a computer screen and keyboard/mouse.

Responsibilities
  • Review patients’ entire current medical records and assign appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS or CPT procedure codes according to accepted coding guidelines and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assign accurate DRG, APC, or E-APG classifications to patient records using the hospital encoding system.
  • Abstract statistical data from records using the hospital abstracting system in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Correct edits flagged by the encoder and financial system.
  • Understand and apply modifiers appropriately.
  • Attend hospital-sponsored educational programs and department coding meetings.
  • Participate in and practice lean management principles and processes.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards and create positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, colleagues, and self.
  • Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Recognize and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards to promote safety for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • Adhere to DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification is preferred.
