Requirements
  • A Master's degree in a relevant field or a combination of equivalent training and experience involving extensive research training in a health research, science and engineering, or social sciences and humanities field.
  • A minimum of 7 years of demonstrated experience within a research-intensive university or similar complex research environment.
  • Scientific or scholarly knowledge and experience in health research, science and engineering, or social sciences and humanities, including publications, presentations, grant writing, training programs, and knowledge mobilization.
  • Substantial knowledge of Canada's research funding landscape, current trends in research funding, and research environments in Ottawa and Canada, including key stakeholders, researchers, networks, and multi-sector partners.
  • Knowledge and experience in university research administration processes, the life cycle of research grants and awards, and work in a complex decentralized university environment.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing business plans and planning documents and advising management and senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience liaising with and maintaining relationships with external funding sponsors.
  • Ability to work with researchers, administrators, faculties, staff, students, administrators from other institutions, and sponsors.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, reviewing, and editing in both official languages.
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy, and judgment.
  • Strong project and time management, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience using computer systems and software such as Windows, PowerPoint, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, financial systems, email, and the internet.
  • Bilingualism in English and French, spoken and written.
Responsibilities
  • Support the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy and structure of support to increase success in large-scale research grant opportunities.
  • Support new approaches to research collaboration, create a state of readiness, establish priorities for response, and create cross-linkages and collaboration with the research community, faculties, and research administration units.
  • Monitor research activity trends within the University and externally to identify priorities and recommend new initiatives.
  • Lead the coordination of complex pre-submission, large-scale scientific grant development and review processes.
  • Manage the full cycle of complex, multidisciplinary grant proposal development, including early preparation, ongoing point of contact, expert advice, communication with research teams and stakeholders, and advancement of successful proposals to post-award administration.
  • Analyze and interpret granting agencies' requirements and guidelines.
  • Support the assembly of intra-institutional and inter-institutional expert research teams.
  • Conduct outreach to multi-sector partners and identify suitable partners aligned with research goals.
  • Manage internal and external review processes.
  • Prepare institutional application sections, support budget development, and generate schematics.
  • Edit complex applications to ensure convincing proposals suitable for multidisciplinary review panels.
  • Plan, organize, guide, and oversee projects and grant development processes as the lead point of contact.
  • Develop and implement internal project management regulations and procedures to improve efficiency and strategic relevance.
  • Analyze and solve complex administrative problems in a timely manner.
  • Liaise between researchers and granting agencies to ensure all parties have the information needed to optimize their chances of success.
  • Design and lead workshops and information sessions for researchers on preparing high-quality funding requests and on administrative procedures related to research management.
  • Cultivate relationships with external partners and collaborators for large research grants and programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty research offices, affiliated institutes, researchers, program managers, and finance teams to gather information and support comprehensive project or grant proposal development.
  • Consult with and provide expert guidance to faculty, staff, and university-wide administrators on complex grant development issues.
  • Communicate strategic research funding opportunities, developmental support, and administrative processes.
  • Implement processes for internal support and early targeting of researchers and outreach concerning eligibility criteria, deadlines, and other important details.
  • Develop training modules and conduct outreach activities, including workshops, concept-testing sessions, and training sessions, to prepare researchers and teams for large-scale, strategic, interdisciplinary peer-reviewed grants and contract research.
  • Identify possible funding sources for interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Conduct research and surveys and compile data, statistics, and other information related to research trends, interdisciplinary research activities, and research funding.
  • Use research and funding information to provide management with advice and recommendations and support long-term strategic planning.
  • Plan and manage assigned special projects, define project scopes, determine steps, monitor progress, make adjustments, and ensure efficient communication between participants.
  • Provide required supervision for administrative support work and ensure tasks are completed according to stated norms and instructions.
