Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline is required.
  • At least 6 years of experience in substation, power delivery, protection and controls, or electrical design is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of substation protection and controls design, including single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring documentation, cable and conduit information, nameplates, and client-specific documentation, is required.
  • Strong working knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards is required.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design software, including AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, is required.
  • Demonstrated project leadership on substation projects is required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required because driving to and between project and substation sites is an essential function of the role.
  • The ability to work in office and active project-site environments, wear required personal protective equipment, walk uneven terrain, and access outdoor substation yards and elevated or confined areas is required.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the protection, control, and wiring design of substation projects, including single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and supporting computer-aided design documentation.
  • Develop and oversee protection and control deliverables, including relay and control schematics, wiring documentation, cable and conduit schedules, nameplates, and related project documentation.
  • Apply advanced-to-expert design standards and client-specific documentation requirements across projects.
  • Coordinate with drafters, designers, other disciplines, clients, vendors, and project managers to resolve design issues and deliver complete, constructible packages.
  • Perform formal checking of small-to-medium project deliverables and review others’ work using client processes and standards.
  • Provide input to project schedules and updates when acting in a lead capacity, accounting for cross-discipline interdependencies.
  • Provide technical direction, mentoring, and guidance to less-experienced engineers and design staff.
  • Coordinate with clients and vendors and make sound design decisions to support reliable execution and reduce rework.
  • Travel frequently to project and substation sites, including sites that are not accessible by public transportation.
  • Conduct field visits involving weather, energized electrical equipment, noise, heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and outdoor substation yards.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Professional Engineer license, or the ability to obtain licensure in the near future, is preferred.
  • Experience leading protection and controls design for high-voltage utility, industrial, or engineering, procurement, and construction substation projects is preferred.
  • Experience checking or reviewing substation protection and controls design packages is preferred.
  • Familiarity with client-specific design standards, project documentation requirements, and construction-support processes is preferred.
