Requirements
  • 1 to 5 years of experience in security, law enforcement, emergency response, or a related field.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet Smith College’s driving credential requirements.
  • Relevant experience in law enforcement, public safety, security, or emergency dispatching.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to quickly learn and use new software (IMC, EMS, ARMS, CJIS, OneCard, etc.).
  • Ability to function calmly and efficiently in all types of situations including emergencies or high-pressure situations.
  • Commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to de-escalate tense situations.
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods, work in inclement weather, and occasionally lift over 25 pounds.
  • Proficiency with Google and ability to quickly learn and use new software.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular patrols by foot, vehicle, or bike of the campus property, including academic buildings, residence halls, and grounds.
  • Monitor for and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, maintenance concerns, or unauthorized access.
  • Check and secure buildings after hours; open and unlock buildings or rooms as assigned.
  • Report lighting and other facility issues to Facilities Management using appropriate work order systems.
  • Provide walking safety escorts and lockout assistance to members of the campus community.
  • Assist with traffic control, parking enforcement, and visitor guidance as needed.
  • Attend department meetings and training sessions as assigned.
  • Actively engage with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to build positive relationships and foster trust.
  • Participate in campus and departmental community engagement programs and safety initiatives.
  • Support emergency response efforts by guiding responding agencies, assisting first responders, while following department protocols.
  • Assist in non-emergency & emergency medical transports when authorized to do so.
  • Respond to fire, intrusion, trouble, door, panic alarms and notify appropriate personnel when necessary.
  • Answer and respond to routine radio and phone communications during shift.
  • Complete accurate, timely, and professional written reports of incidents, observations, and service calls.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow college and department policies regarding records and information sharing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Desired Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree in Criminal justice, emergency management, psychology, or a related field.
  • Certifications in CPR, CJIS, or APCO.
  • Prior experience working in a college or university setting.
