Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program.
  • Be licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse in South Carolina or a compact state.
  • Have a current CPR card, specifically American Heart Association Basic Life Support or Red Cross Professional Rescuer certification.
  • Have two years of related experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Hold Licensed Practical Nurse licensure from the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification before completing general orientation.
  • Perform nursing work in an upright position, walk or remain mobile frequently, and work indoors continuously.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted and lift or lower objects up to 50 pounds between floor level and 36 inches unassisted.
  • Lift and carry patients weighing up to 350 pounds with assistance and push or pull objects weighing up to 350 pounds unassisted.
  • Maintain required vision, hearing, tactile, olfactory, peripheral-vision, depth-perception, and color-discrimination abilities, with correction where specified.
  • Be physically qualified by medical personnel for respirator use initially and annually.
  • Have computer literacy.
  • Be able to work rotating shifts and overtime as required.
  • Be able to learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide patient- and family-centered care under the direction of a registered nurse within the nurse's scope of practice.
  • Apply critical reasoning, clinical judgment, and critical thinking to clinical problem-solving and appropriate care and treatment.
  • Assist medical staff with patient preparation, examinations, and procedures.
  • Interview and screen patients, document findings, and obtain vital signs.
  • Perform telephone and in-person screenings.
  • Participate in documentation and reporting responsibilities, prioritize patient calls, and clean and stock examination rooms.
  • Perform nursing care for inmates and detainees in accordance with facility rules and security procedures.
  • Conduct medical intake screenings during booking or admission when needed.
  • Respond to medical emergencies inside the secure perimeter.
  • Work with correctional officers to ensure safe movement of inmates to and from the medical unit.
  • Maintain control of sharps, medications, and medical equipment according to correctional safety standards.
  • Provide care in locked cells, examination rooms, segregation units, and intake or booking areas.
  • Maintain professionalism, appropriate boundaries, and awareness at all times.
