We currently have an opportunity for a Water Resources Hydrometrist to join our team based in Bristol or Bournemouth. Joining us on a permanent, full-time basis, you will receive a competitive salary of circa £32,000 per annum plus excellent benefits.
About the role
Pennon operates a range of raw water sources across Devon, Cornwall, Bristol, Bournemouth and the Isles of Scilly. Continual monitoring is required to understand the water availability at our sources whilst ensuring their environmental health is maintained.
The role of the Hydrometrist is to maintain and develop our hydrometric monitoring network across our raw water sources, collating data on their performance which is essential for the management of both the day to day and longer term operation and identifying any associated investment needs. This role will take the lead for hydrometric monitoring across our Bristol and Bournemouth operational areas but will be required to travel across the other areas to provide support as required. The information and data gathered by the water resources Hydrometrist underpins our operational decision making and strategic long term water resources planning.
What you'll be doing:
- Operate, maintain and calibrate the monitoring networks and equipment, ensuring at all times adherence to our Company Health and Safety standards.
- Development of new ground and surface water monitoring locations, in line with industry best practice,
- Ad-hoc river flow monitoring (spot gauging) to validate gauged stage-discharge relationships and/or to understand flows at unmonitored sites.
- Maintain data repositories on the company corporate data systems of the monitoring data that is collected.
- Validate, analyse and interpret data, adhering to industry standards and best practice.
- Provide accurate and timely data, and information to internal staff and key stakeholders, to support operational decision making and the environmental management of our sites
- Required to travel across Bristol and Bournemouth with less regular visits to Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to collect hydrometric data and support other members of the Hydrometry team.
What we are looking for:
- Scientific or related degree in a relevant field
- Qualifications related to health and safety for field-based staff would be desirable
- Qualifications in hydrology or environmental studies would be desirable
- Experience of environmental data collection and management (e.g. river flows, groundwater levels, rainfall)
- Practical field work experience
- Numerate and comfortable working with data.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring techniques and approaches
- Ability to work safely in all conditions and to recognize when it may not be safe to undertake the work
- Ability to manage your own time and work independently.
- Ability to adapt plans in response to changing conditions.
- Enthusiasm to learn new skills
