PlayStation is the brand behind Sony Interactive Entertainment’s gaming hardware, services, and studios. It creates and sells game consoles and related devices, runs the online PlayStation Network and subscription services, and develops and publishes games through PlayStation Studios. The product set works as an ecosystem: a console for playing games, a network for online play, digital storefronts for buying games, and a large portfolio of first- and third-party games from its studios around the world. Compared with rivals, PlayStation relies on a long history of console generations, a big collection of exclusive games, and a global network of studios to offer unique experiences that are tied to its hardware and services. Its goal is to provide engaging, borderless play experiences for players worldwide, continually delivering new hardware, services, and games that bring people together.

What believers are saying

  • Sony reported record gaming operating profit in 2025, driven by software and PS Plus.
  • Reuters said Sony raised 2026 gaming profit guidance despite lower PS5 sales.
  • PSN reached a record active audience in late 2025, strengthening recurring revenue.

What critics are saying

  • Sony cut 900 PlayStation jobs in February 2024 and more Bungie staff in June 2026.
  • Bungie layoffs hit Destiny and Marathon, exposing live-service execution risk and portfolio churn.
  • Bluepoint, Dark Outlaw, London Studio, and Firewalk closures show a recurring studio attrition problem.

What makes PlayStation unique

  • PlayStation pairs console exclusives with PS Plus and network services, not hardware alone.
  • Sony’s studio network spans Bungie, Haven, Firewalk, and Insomniac, enabling portfolio depth.
  • PlayStation Portal and PC releases extend the ecosystem beyond the PS5 box.
