Requirements
  • Graduate from a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Hold radiography certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or nuclear medicine technologist certification from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
  • Possess current licensure required by the state board where services will be provided: a radiographer license through the Maryland Board of Physicians, a radiographer license through the Ohio Board of Radiology, no state license in Pennsylvania, or a radiological technologist or nuclear medicine and diagnostic computed tomography license through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete state criminal background checks and federal background checks when applicable.
  • Prepare rooms, equipment, and materials for patient examinations, including sterile technique, and clean and disinfect rooms and equipment after each examination according to infection-control policies.
  • Perform examinations according to physician orders, explain procedures to patients, document protocol variations, and relay patient history and clinical data to the radiologist.
  • Observe patients and equipment, report unusual occurrences or changes, and transport or assist patients as needed.
  • Document patient status related to radiology and computed tomography procedures in the patient chart.
  • Document variances, repeat examinations, and other occurrences to support quality improvement.
  • Maintain stock supplies and perform general office duties, including proper film labeling and adherence to prescribed techniques.
  • Practice safe radiation exposure and protection and general safety for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Comply with departmental and hospital-wide policies and procedures and participate in patient-safety and patient-protection training.
  • Produce diagnostic-quality images using computed tomography equipment and evaluate images for proper technique and demonstration of anatomy and pathology.
  • Perform critical procedures under stress during emergency procedures.
  • Perform diagnostic studies with mobile radiographic equipment in emergency or patient rooms when applicable, and perform diagnostic studies in surgical suites using a C-arm and other equipment.
  • Provide care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform intravenous insertion and blood draws when applicable.
  • Administer intravenous, oral, or rectal contrast for computed tomography imaging according to radiologist protocol, department manual, and physician or care-provider orders.
  • Use picture archiving and communication systems to ensure examinations are completed and available for radiologist interpretation and referring-provider review.
  • Perform related duties assigned by the department manager or lead technologist.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation when required by the facility.
  • Frequently walk, stand, stoop, kneel, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, and feel throughout the work shift.
  • Lift, move, and position patients of all weights with varying assistance, exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Maintain hearing and visual acuity within the normal range.
  • Work with exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, explosive gases, cleaning agents, disinfectants, and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
  • Work in a high-stress environment with constant interruptions.
  • Understand patient growth and development, treatment scope, and patient needs.
  • Understand patient biophysical, biopsychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural, ethical, and discharge-planning needs.
  • Understand total care for patients whose diseases are not responsive to curative treatment, focusing on pain and symptom control.
