Requirements
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3–6 months of related experience are required.
  • Previous experience working with medical insurance is highly preferred.
  • Keyboarding and computer skills, accurate filing, professional communication, customer service, and the ability to perform light clerical duties are required.
  • Previous computer experience with hospital-based programs such as Medic, Misys, Tiger, or another practice management system is preferred.
  • The ability to organize, alphabetize, file, and prioritize multiple tasks is required.
  • Excellent math skills and the ability to use basic office equipment are required.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive medical information is required.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills are required.
  • The ability to maintain positive customer service and establish effective working relationships in a team environment is required.
  • The role requires sustained computer work, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, sit, and lift light objects.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality, complete required training, document activities accurately and promptly, follow hospital safety and infection control policies, and maintain a safe and clean environment is required.
Responsibilities
  • Register patients and customers and confirm patient or guarantor demographic and insurance information.
  • Complete all required fields in the practice management system.
  • Determine patient copayments using an electronic insurance verification system and collect current and past-due payments.
  • Enter charges and payments into the Misys/Tiger system or another practice management system.
  • Prepare encounter forms for charge entry using the correct ICD-9 and CPT codes as they relate to Codescan.
  • Schedule and coordinate patient appointments, tests, and referrals according to provider preferences and patient needs.
  • Answer telephones, take messages, route callers, and provide or relay information according to service standards.
  • Maintain patient medical records according to current required standards.
  • Obtain patient authorization for transfers of private health information.
  • Perform office duties such as sorting and distributing mail, copying, filing, faxing, ordering supplies, and completing forms.
  • Compose, format, type, and proofread standard letters, reports, correspondence, and other documents.
  • Maintain a clean unit environment and report equipment malfunctions or problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain accountability for assigned special projects and perform other assignments directed by management.
  • Maintain effective working relationships within the organization and treat patients, families, visitors, customers, and employees with kindness and respect.
  • Maintain provider schedules, including meetings, appointments, cancellations, rescheduling, and add-on appointments.
  • Print physicians’ daily schedules.
  • Run reports from the Misys/Tiger system, such as charge summaries and missing-ticket reports.
  • Prepare deposits, complete daily deposit verification forms, and verify deposit accuracy.
  • Perform duties assigned by the physician, practice manager, or office supervisor.
  • Maintain unsupervised access to unit medication rooms for stocking or retrieving supplies.
  • Review demographic and insurance information for clinical patients, identify missing or inaccurate information, and communicate with office staff to ensure accurate registration.
