- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program, graduation from the Med Ed Program, or one year of clinical experience is required.
- Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- A state criminal background check and, if applicable, a federal background check are required for regulated areas.
- The employee must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, walk, and carry materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- The employee must be able to position and/or lift patients and stand or walk for 4 to 12 hours per day.
- The employee must be able to respond quickly to varying demands from providers and patients.
- Perform duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic.
- Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
- Support medical staff in meeting patients’ needs and ensuring efficient operation of the outpatient unit.
- Assist providers with requisitions and forms for patient examinations or testing and help ensure test results are available for patient visits.
- Assist patients and providers with medical office visits.
- Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of an attending provider.
- Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
- Obtain and document patient specimens as ordered.
- Document and report test results to medical providers.
- Perform assigned point-of-care testing after training and skills testing, and maintain quality-control testing and logs.
- Schedule ancillary, diagnostic, and therapeutic testing and procedures as needed.
- Act as a chaperone during medical examinations.
- Ensure medical records and test results, including records from referring physicians, are available for visits; inspect and review records for order and completeness.
- Monitor the nurse call system and relay telephone information to appropriate staff.
- Provide assistance and information to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
- Participate in the Quality Assurance Program.
- Generate required patient charge data according to outpatient procedures.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for patient-care needs by preparing orders and reporting needs to a supervisor.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the use and care of printers, embossers, computers, and other assigned equipment.
- Schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using the computerized system according to clinic policies and procedures.
- Register patients, collect identification and billing information, enter data into the computer, obtain charts and fee sheets, and obtain required signatures for release of information and consent to treatment.
- Assist the Registration Specialist with depositing money and late-night coverage.
- Assist the Manager or Supervisor with unit correspondence using computer software.
- Process and mail letters to patients.
- Registration or certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred.
- One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care is preferred.
