Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing for the nurse practitioner track.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers for the nurse practitioner track.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia for the nurse practitioner track.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- Registered Nurse First Assist certification is required for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses requesting First Assist privileges.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification is at the department's discretion.
- A Bachelor's Degree as a Physician Assistant is required for the physician assistant track.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Ability to work protracted or irregular hours and around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- Strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for surgical and transplant patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and, when applicable, after discharge in the ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, discharges, procedures, and preoperative and postoperative management and coordination of care for the service.
- Complete preprocedural and presurgical evaluations and serve in the perioperative area, including serving as an operating-room First Assist.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with surgical and transplant faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests needed for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop comprehensive individualized plans of care for surgical and transplant patients, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex surgical and transplant patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate surgical and transplant patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting when applicable.
- Assist with collection of outcome measures when applicable.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making by identifying, evaluating, and managing the individual needs of patients and families.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for surgical and transplant patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature when appropriate in the area of expertise.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient's medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in surgical and transplant practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate creative problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role delivering care to surgical and transplant patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports when appropriate.
- Review and interpret surgical and transplant data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist surgery and transplant faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
- Transplant surgery experience is preferred.
- Acute-care medical/surgical experience is preferred.
- Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist qualification is preferred for the nurse practitioner track; Family Nurse Practitioner candidates will be considered.
- A Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
