Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of conventional and CNC machine tools.
  • Knowledge of machine tool attachments such as rotary vises, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, angular drive heads, taper attachments, and rotary tables.
  • Knowledge of properties and machinability of various metals and synthetic materials.
  • Knowledge of trade mathematics including plane geometry and trigonometric functions.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety standards and shop procedures.
  • Skill in setting up and operating a variety of machine tools.
  • Skill in CNC programming, troubleshooting, and editing.
  • Skill in interpreting blueprints and technical documentation.
  • Skill in using precision measurement instruments including: Vernier calipers; Micrometers (inside, outside, depth); Height gauges; Dial indicators; Surface gauges; Gauge blocks; Optical and mechanical comparators; Go/No-Go gauges.
Responsibilities
  • Manufacture, repair, and rebuild mechanical components to precise specifications.
  • Set up and operate conventional machine tools including lathes, boring mills, milling machines (vertical, horizontal, universal), grinders, shapers, planers, thread cutters, and radial drills.
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC machinery; proof initial parts; edit programs for optimization and efficiency.
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, attachments, coolants, and machine speeds for various materials and job requirements.
  • Maintain required dimensional tolerances through precise alignment, setup, and machining practices.
  • Interpret blueprints, program readouts, technical directives, and work orders.
  • Establish missing tolerances where necessary and determine machining sequences.
  • Machine complex configurations, compound angles, and unusual surface geometries using improvised or customized setups when required.
  • Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments.
  • Debug and correct CNC programs developed by others.
  • Apply advanced shop mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry, to calculate dimensions, angles, and machining parameters.
  • Follow all applicable safety regulations, procedures, and best practices.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
