Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline, life sciences, relevant field, or a nursing degree (BSN), depending on the therapeutic area served.
  • Five years of experience within the field, including one year in a managerial role in healthcare.
  • An internal Houston Methodist employee may be considered with four years of experience in a relevant field and performance demonstrating leadership abilities.
  • A Certified Clinical Research Coordinator certification from the Association of Clinical Research Professionals or a Certified Clinical Research Professional certification from the Society of Clinical Research Associates is required.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English to perform the essential functions of the job, particularly activities affecting patient or employee safety or security.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers through multiple channels.
  • Ability to use interpersonal styles and techniques to gain acceptance of ideas or plans and adapt behavior to tasks, situations, and individuals.
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership, critical thinking, self-direction, initiative, and effective oral and written communication.

Responsibilities
  • Manage complex clinical research projects involving single or multiple sites and research teams.
  • Directly supervise research staff to ensure effective planning, oversight, and coordination of clinical research projects.
  • Monitor project quality, timelines, financial viability, and compliance with applicable federal, state, and other regulations, laws, and Houston Methodist Research Institute guidelines.
  • Provide guidance to department and Houston Methodist Research Institute leadership on clinical trial issues and development.
  • Manage daily work activities, staffing, productivity, quality, functional excellence, and efficiency of the department.
  • Contribute to staffing decisions, including hiring and terminating employment, and coach and counsel employees regarding work performance.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures supporting a safe and effective work environment.
  • Implement training, monitoring, and operational initiatives supporting ethical and legal business practices and accreditation, regulatory, and government requirements.
  • Select, schedule, supervise, retain, evaluate, develop, and mentor department employees.
  • Conduct department meetings, performance appraisals, new-hire feedback sessions, coaching and corrective counseling, recognition activities, onboarding, and employee development conversations.
  • Facilitate team dynamics, teambuilding, department process improvements, and cross-department collaboration.
  • Plan and organize daily department operations, schedules, and activities; set priorities and functional standards; and direct staff to support service delivery.
  • Implement complex research projects, including screening and enrolling subjects, conducting protocol-required testing, collecting and entering data into case report forms, and reporting to study monitors.
  • Prepare presentations and schedule institutional training for physicians, nurses, and staff on research protocols.
  • Establish productivity expectations and recommend staffing requirements to meet research-team needs.
  • Identify operational problems, issues, and barriers across projects; communicate patterns and trends to leadership; and support process and system improvements.
  • Maintain a safe and effective working environment, including safety plans, infection-control principles, accreditation requirements, and staff credential compliance.
  • Use and optimize information systems to support operations, performance improvement, and data management and analysis.
  • Monitor and improve department workflow, report accidents, near misses, and adverse events, and identify safety solutions through collaboration.
  • Monitor employee compliance with policies, procedures, and Houston Methodist Human Resources standards and take appropriate corrective actions.
  • Monitor pre-study, study-initiation, interval, and study-closeout site visits.
  • Conduct study operational-feasibility and risk assessments and assess ongoing research-team training needs.
  • Maintain and archive proper study documentation.
  • Assist with department budget development and manage or audit expenses within approved budget parameters.
  • Implement strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs by optimizing productivity and resource efficiency and minimizing incidental and overtime costs.
  • Identify and implement innovative workflow solutions, lead unit projects, and support department or system change initiatives.
  • Evaluate processes, recommend and implement action plans, and participate in developing new procedures and revising existing procedures.
  • Build strategic relationships across areas, teams, departments, and units to achieve business goals.
  • Identify developmental needs for self and staff and take appropriate action.
  • Be available for on-call duties during emergencies and travel within and outside the Houston metropolitan area as required.
