In order to focus on places where Mozilla can impact the next era of our work, we are increasingly working on the topic of trustworthy AI. For us, this means especially two things: human agency is a core part of how AI is built and integrated, and corporate accountability is real and enforced.
Overview
The Global Lead, AI Policy + Government Relations advances Mozilla’s policy goals in line with our organization’s global TrustworthyAI strategy. Currently, our global policy work is concentrated in the US and EU, with plans to expand to India, Brazil, and Kenya.
The Lead will develop and implement effective strategies for bringing Mozilla’s AI policy research and recommendations to the attention of global policymakers, particularly in these key countries/regions. The Lead will work closely with Mozilla Foundation executives, program staff and the Mozilla Corporation’s Global Policy team.
The Lead reports to the Mozilla Foundation’s Vice President, Advocacy. Strong preference for candidates based in North America with proximity to Washington, D.C. We have a remote organizational culture and benefits.
Responsibilities
The core responsibilities of this position, include the following:
- Designing and implementing strategies to bring Mozilla’s work on Trustworthy AI to the attention of global policymakers, including relevant administration and agency officials.
- Meeting ambitious policy-related goals, utilising various organizational resources and collaborations.
- Arranging meetings, briefings and other ongoing engagement with influential collaborators to influence the global Trustworthy AI policy agenda.
- Representing Mozilla with influential external partners, including government officials, funders and the media.
- Formulating and/or evaluating Trustworthy AI public policies or proposals, in collaboration with Mozilla leadership.
- Maintaining a detailed knowledge of global issues related to Trustworthy AI.
- Tracking and analyzing legislation, regulations, other policy proposals, and hearings, announcements, and other government actions relevant to Mozilla’s Trustworthy AI policies, and sharing summary information with program teams on a timely basis.
- Informing and advising philanthropic and advocacy staff on relevant global policy developments.
- Working with program and communications staff to translate complex information into accessible written materials for distribution to policymakers and other collaborators.
- Reviewing and updating materials and program plans relevant to public policy debates.
- Advising on philanthropic investments and programs with Mozilla’s policy goals and emerging opportunities in mind.
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key collaborators including government officials, civil society organizations, corporate allies, and researchers to advance Mozilla’s Trustworthy AI agenda.
- Developing and participating in relevant coalitions and strategic partnerships in globally relevant regions.
- Fully aligning with, and serving as a liaison between program staff and Mozilla’s legal team ensure full compliance with relevant lobbying disclosure and reporting rules.
- Ensuring Mozilla’s public policies advance diversity, equity, inclusion and justice, including alignment with the Mozilla Manifesto.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of proven experience in tech policy, preferably with AI-issue and global expertise.
- Experience conceiving, planning and implementing effective policy-related initiatives.
- Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including policymakers, executives, civil society leadership, or equivalent.
- Proven track record of supporting and influencing colleagues across a wide range of internal teams and coalitions.
- Strong writing and editing skills on materials targeted to policymaker and partner audiences.
- Experience in and outside the US is preferred.
- Work experience in a consumer tech company and/or related civil society organization, preferred.
- Consistent track record of working collaboratively with partners across levels, geographies, backgrounds and cultures to meet ambitions goals

Salary and Benefits Information:
The Mozilla Foundation is dedicated to fair and equitable compensation for our staff. We aim to pay a competitive and market-based salary that takes into consideration the responsibilities and requirements of the role. We aim to offer at the midpoint of our salary ranges for the purposes of increasing inclusivity and fairness of our offer process and ensuring internal equity. We do not ask for, or take into account, salary histories in our offer process.
The base salary ranges, along with mid-point, for this role in each of the key countries in which we employ staff is listed below. We target the 75th percentile of market pay as a salary band midpoint for all levels, with 10% either side of the midpoint to create a salary range.
- Germany: €87,855 - €107,378 (mid-point: €97,616)
- UK: £54,894 - £67,093 (mid-point: £60,994)
- Canada: $99,518 - $121,633 (mid-point: $110,575)
- US: $101,104 - $123,572 (mid-point: $112,338)
Depending on the successful candidate’s location, we may also add in a geographic differential to this base salary that accounts for local job market weighting. This differential is applied to the above ranges depending on the successful candidate’s location. Below are some of the common cities in which we hire staff along with representative examples of salary ranges, along with mid-point, with the geographical differential applied:
- Inner London: £59,834 - £73,131 (mid-point: £66,483)
- Toronto: $107,379 - $131,241 (mid-point: $119,310)
- New York: $112,023 - $136,917 (mid-point: $124,470)
