Requirements
  • Completion of some high school coursework.
  • A few months of experience in processing or distribution of goods or customer service.
  • Knowledge of lifting guidelines.
  • Cash handling experience.
  • Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures, including bank deposits and summary reports.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 29 pounds frequently without assistance, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing products.
  • Ability to successfully undergo applicable screening and background checks.
  • Ability to work while standing for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift or move 30 pounds.
  • Ability to wear gloves when handling unknown contents and follow applicable health and safety precautions.
  • Ability to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and the organization's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to develop an understanding of and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose in Canada.
Responsibilities
  • Greet and interact with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to store sales targets and provide efficient, courteous customer service while using tact with difficult customers.
  • Maintain knowledge of product pricing and featured sale products and protect the integrity of donated items.
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Accurately complete customer transactions, including cash and debit sales, with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
  • Follow store policies for cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
  • Process donations by loading, unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing them.
  • Respond to customer enquiries by phone and in person using knowledge of store stock.
  • Monitor activity within the store to support store security.
  • Assist with store layout plans, window displays, merchandise displays, and tidy maintenance.
  • Control inventory by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing items as directed.
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish sales-floor inventory, and remove inventory from the sales floor as directed.
  • Handle merchandise safely and in an organized manner; assist with stock rotation, textile recycling, and metal recycling.
  • Assist donors with contributions, unload donations, and place stock in the appropriate location.
  • Maintain proper sorting and processing of goods, comply with quality standards, and ensure products are priced correctly according to store policy.
  • Support staff and customer safety by removing snow, clearing fire exits, cleaning spills, and removing obstacles inside and outside the store.
  • Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store; tidy and restock shelves; clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary; and clean common areas on a rotational basis.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
