Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent is required
  • Two years of experience in the areas of power system planning or design of transmission system facilities required
  • Knowledge of reliability standards and practices related to power system planning and design
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical documents
  • Ability to write technical documents or presentations with tables, charts and graphs
  • Ability to comprehend and apply advanced mathematical principles such as calculus, modern algebra and/or statistical theory
  • Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations and proofs of theorems
  • Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office applications, e-mail and internet programs
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.)
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
Responsibilities
  • The Planning Engineer will coordinate, perform, and review technical studies related to the interconnection of proposed new generation, transmission and load facilities to the New York State transmission system.
  • You will also assist in coordinating with other System & Resource Planning and NYISO departments as necessary to prepare various reports and filings as appropriate.
  • The planning engineer will assist in responding to customer, regulator or other outside inquiries as appropriate, and assists in development or review of new or modified documents such as tariffs, manuals, reliability standards, etc. as appropriate.
  • Reviews proposed project facilities including the conceptual design for interconnection of the project to the NYS transmission system and associated modeling data provided for the project.
  • Prepares base cases to be used in interconnection studies.
  • Provides technical coordination with others involved in the performance of interconnection studies including the project developers, transmission owners, consultants, etc.
  • Performs or reviews the technical analysis (power flow, short circuit, and/or stability analysis) for interconnection studies.
  • Evaluates and identifies any system upgrade facilities and/or system deliverability upgrades required for proposed projects and develops cost estimates for the identified upgrades.
  • Prepares and/or reviews interconnection study reports and associated documentation.
  • Leads and/or participates in project study meetings.
Desired Qualifications
  • A concentration in electric power system engineering is preferred
  • Master’s degree is desired
  • Course studies related to power system planning and design, particularly transmission planning or design are highly desired
  • Experience with computer software, models and databases used in transmission planning or interconnection studies such as power flow, short circuit and/or transient stability desired; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Knowledge of the following software tools is desired: Power Flow (Siemens PTI PSS/E & PowerGEM TARA) Transfer Capability Analysis (PowerGEM TARA program or equivalent) Stability (primarily PSS/E) Short Circuit (primarily ASPEN)
