(September 8, 2026) - Mary Washington Hospital is expanding access to advanced kidney stone treatment with the introduction of vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy - sometimes called vacuum lithotripsy, an innovative technology designed to improve stone removal, reduce complications and help patients recover more quickly. The procedure combines laser stone fragmentation with continuous suction to remove stone fragments and dust in real time. Unlike traditional ureteroscopy, which typically requires surgeons to retrieve fragments individually using a basket device, vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy simultaneously breaks apart and removes stones during the procedure. The technology is designed to address two common challenges in kidney stone surgery: residual stone fragments that can lead to recurring symptoms or future stone formation, and elevated pressure within the kidney that may increase the risk of infection. "Vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy represents an important advancement in how we treat kidney stones," said Naveen Nandanan, MD, with Urology Associates of Fredericksburg. "By combining stone fragmentation and removal into a single, continuous process, we can be more thorough in clearing stones while maintaining better control of pressure inside the kidney. Our goal is to help patients achieve a stone-free outcome with fewer complications and a smoother recovery." Patients undergoing vacuum-assisted ureteroscopy may benefit from more complete stone removal, shorter procedure times, and a reduced risk of post-operative infection. Vacuum-assisted approaches can also improve stone clearance while reducing the need for multiple procedures in appropriately selected patients. The technology is particularly beneficial for patients with larger kidney stones, dense or impacted stones, or those whose stones are likely to produce significant amounts of debris during treatment. It may also be advantageous for patients at higher risk of complications, including individuals with diabetes, recurrent kidney stones, or a solitary kidney. Previously, patients requiring this level of advanced stone treatment often had to travel outside the region to larger academic medical centers. By offering the procedure locally, Mary Washington Hospital enables patients to receive advanced care closer to home while remaining connected to their established care team. (August 17, 2026) - The Women's and Children's Care Center at Mary Washington Hospital recently welcomed 51 babies in a single week, including four sets of twins, making it one of the busiest weeks for deliveries in the hospital's recent history. The week stood out not only for the number of births but also for the number of multiple births. For Ann Weed, director of Women's Services at Mary Washington Hospital, the week was unlike any she has experienced during her tenure. "In my 28 years at Mary Washington Hospital, I've never seen this many multiple births in a single week and on the unit at the same time," Weed said. "It was a busy week, but our team remained focused on providing safe, high-quality care for every mother and baby. Mary Washington Healthcare welcomes 55 new residents and fellows to its Graduate Medical Education program. FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (August 3, 2026) - Mary Washington Healthcare is proud to welcome an incoming class of 55 new physician residents and fellows to its Graduate Medical Education program, bringing the physician training program to more than 100 physicians. After launching three years ago, Mary Washington Healthcare graduated its first class of practicing physicians this past June. Of the 21 physician residents who completed training, half have chosen to continue practicing in this community. Additionally, MWHC graduated its first family medicine obstetrics fellow. As the Graduate Medical Education program continues to grow, that impact is expected to increase. "This community was an important part of my training as a physician," said Lucas Hastings, MD, a 2026 graduate of Mary Washington Healthcare's Family Medicine Residency Program. "I developed meaningful connections that made Fredericksburg feel like home. That sense of partnership and trust inspired me to stay, continue caring for patients, and help train future physicians who will serve this community for years to come." Hastings will now serve in a faculty role, training other family medicine resident physicians.
