The event featured remarks from Indiana Gov. Mike Braun, U.S. Sen. Todd Young, Purdue University interim President Mitch Daniels, SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-Jung and other dignitaries. "Today marks the day when the U.S. and SK hynix embark on a new future of AI together," Kwak said. "The U.S. is the epicenter of AI innovation, bringing together premier customers, top-tier R&D capabilities and partners. We will expand our investments and collaboration in the U.S., grow together, and become the most trusted partner in shaping the future of AI in America." Announced in April 2024, the over $4 billion project marks SK hynix's first high bandwidth memory production hub established in the U.S. The historic investment into Indiana was propelled by Purdue's track record of innovation, research excellence, and long-standing success in developing talent and advancing research through partnerships with industry leaders. Purdue is leading U.S. semiconductor reshoring efforts, launching the nation's first comprehensive Semiconductor Degrees Program in 2022 to prepare students for careers across the semiconductor industry. Currently, over 800 undergraduate and graduate students are pursuing a semiconductor certificate or departmental concentration or participating in SCalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement (SCALE), the preeminent U.S. program for semiconductor workforce development in the defense sector. "It's appropriate that today's event is called a groundbreaking because it is true in so much more than the physical sense," Daniels said. "Purdue's partnership with SK hynix will also provide groundbreaking opportunities for our students, our researchers, our community, our state and our nation as we begin the work of building a more prosperous state and a stronger and more resilient America." The West Lafayette fab - industry shorthand for fabrication plant - will support approximately 1,000 employees when production begins. "This project will usher in the next generation of American innovation, bring thousands of good-paying jobs to Indiana and supercharge regional economic development," Braun said. "It's a win for Hoosiers, a win for our economy and a great leap forward for Indiana in the race to be the best in the industries of the future." New agreement supports advanced packaging initiatives At Thursday's ceremony, SK hynix signed a partnership framework agreement with Purdue for research and development collaboration in the field of advanced packaging. Through the partnership, SK hynix will expand its efforts to cultivate and recruit world-class talent from across the Midwest as well as access cutting-edge research and emerging technologies developed through Purdue's innovation ecosystem. At the heart of Purdue's research enterprise is the Birck Nanotechnology Center, home to one of the largest academic cleanrooms in the country and 33,000 square feet of specialized laboratories. Further bolstered by Purdue Research Foundation's (PRF) world-class intellectual property management and technology commercialization efforts, the company will engage with pioneering semiconductor innovations and accelerate the transition of promising discoveries from lab to marketplace. The NAND market expanded 70 percent in the April-June period compared with three months earlier, driven by rising prices, according to data compiled by industry tracker Counterpoint Research. The growth followed a 90 percent quarter-on-quarter increase in the first quarter. Samsung Electronics maintained its No. 1 position with a 28 percent market share in the second quarter, while SK hynix ranked second with a 19 percent share. Micron Technology Inc. ranked third, benefiting from higher selling prices. SEOUL: South Korea announced plans on Thursday (Sep 3) to put a second presidential office and legislative complex in the administrative city of Sejong, as it accelerates efforts to move hundreds of institutions out of Seoul in a bid to lessen the capital's dominance. The nation has long struggled with a widening divide between regions, with about half its 51 million people concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area for jobs and education opportunities. The plan, which also includes relocating the gender equality ministry and prosecution service, is the latest in a decade-long push to move state bodies out of Seoul and promote balanced development. Relocations began in 2012, when the prime minister's office moved to Sejong, about 120km south of Seoul. Since then, 44 central government bodies - including the finance and health ministries - have already relocated to the city. Officials said 350 public institutions based in the Seoul metropolitan area will have their relocation plans finalised in 2026. "Balanced growth is now no longer a matter of choice, but a survival strategy for a sustainable South Korea," said Prime Minister Han Seong-sook in a briefing. The government aims to complete a second presidential office in Sejong by August 2029 and a second National Assembly building by 2033, Han said. The foreign and unification ministries could also be relocated once the presidential office and National Assembly complex are completed, according to Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung. The announcement follows plans by chip giants Samsung Electronics and SK hynix to invest 800 trillion won (US$589 billion) in a chip hub in southwest South Korea, also aimed at reducing regional inequality. Many regions face shrinking and ageing populations, forcing schools and children's clinics to close, as the country grapples with one of the world's lowest birth rates. As of 2024, 130 of South Korea's 228 cities, counties and districts - or 57 per cent - were classified as being at risk of disappearing due to population decline, according to the government. The Seoul capital region accounts for just 12 per cent of its land but 53 per cent of national GDP - and more than three-fifths of the country's research and development investment, according to OECD data. "The starting point of virtually all the major problems South Korea currently faces is the extreme imbalance in the country's development," said President Lee Jae Myung last week during a meeting. SK Hynix, South Korea's second-largest company and the world's largest memory chip supplier, holds approximately 55% of the rapidly growing High Bandwidth Memory market. The company is the leading memory supplier for AI hardware providers like Nvidia. SK Hynix manufactures DRAM and NAND flash memory chips used in smartphones, computers, and AI data centres. In 2025, the company's earnings per share more than doubled whilst annual revenue jumped 42% year-over-year. Gross profit margins reached over 70%. The company is building a $4 billion HBM facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, supported by $458 million in CHIPS Act funding and $500 million in loans.
