Requirements
  • A current, valid North Carolina driver's license is required.
  • A personal vehicle is required for investigations and assessments.
  • For the Investigative Social Worker role, candidates must have a master's degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work experience; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited school of social work and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a master's degree in a counseling field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or a bachelor's degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three years of social work or counseling experience; or a bachelor's degree and four years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or a related human service field involving casework, group work, or community organization techniques; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Candidates must be able to prioritize, identify, and assess risks, problems, and needs in stressful situations and effectively de-escalate individuals.
  • Knowledge of medical, behavioral, and socioeconomic problems and their treatment is required.
  • Knowledge of funding sources and how to utilize them is required.
  • Knowledge of basic criminal justice procedures, medical and mental disorders, personality theory, family systems dynamics, interpersonal relations, cultural differences, values, and lifestyles is required.
  • Knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices and their application to casework and community problems is required.
  • Knowledge of agency procedures and resources, community systems and resources, manual materials, state and federal regulations, permanency planning philosophy, and laws governing protective services for children is required.
  • Candidates hired as Investigative Social Worker Trainees must meet the Social Worker IV minimum requirements within two years of their start date.
  • Candidates must submit transcripts with their application.
  • The selected candidate must submit to a drug test.
Responsibilities
  • Assess the risk and safety of children in response to actual or suspected child neglect, abuse, or dependency by investigating homes, schools, and other relevant locations or people.
  • Develop and monitor service plans with families involved in Child Protective Services and provide or refer services as needed.
  • Make recommendations to the court regarding needed services, progress, and barriers to a permanent plan.
  • Provide direct services to children and parents or caretakers by conducting timely, comprehensive assessments and providing ongoing intervention when warranted.
  • Ensure safety planning for children in compliance with state and federal statutes and policies.
  • Seek a court petition or non-secure custody when children cannot remain safely in their homes.
  • Assess, support, supervise, and counsel families involved with Child Protective Services to ensure child safety, well-being, and permanence.
  • Evaluate available information to determine the appropriateness of intervention and the required level of services.
  • Prepare legal documents and court reports and provide court testimony when warranted.
  • Complete and maintain required documentation, forms, and reports in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Provide limited transportation to families when necessary to access services addressing safety and well-being issues.
  • Advise clients about the Department's mandated responsibilities, agency policies and procedures, and clients' rights.
  • Establish rapport with children, families, and relevant professionals and community members using a strengths-based, family-centered approach.
  • Coordinate goal-directed visitation with birth families in accordance with court orders and service agreements.
  • Develop or participate in Child and Family Teams to support collaborative service planning and case coordination among multiple service providers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
